My cat's mouth lump disappeared. Is it serious or just a cyst?

There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. If it was small and it is now drained and there is no inflammation present then it is probably fine to just keep an eye on her. If a discharge develops or it becomes warm to the touch or painful, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as antibiotics are likely going to be needed. Hello. I would just watch this for now. I have removed several of these off of older cats, & they are most often benign & not dangerous. Removal is always curative. If it looks like it is enlarging, or it is interfering with his ability to eat or chew, definitely consider having it removed. Otherwise, just monitor for now. If he does have a cyst, these can reoccur if the sac of the cyst isn't removed. I would have him seen by a vet to see if this really is a cyst and if the sac does need to be removed. Best of luck.

Hello. Only with a good exam & a needle aspirate can we tell the nature of a new or re-occurring lump. I am so glad that you realize that all lumps & bumps should be evaluated, but fortunately, not all of them are worrisome. I had a client that had a cat with a tennis ball sized lump attached to her neck. It was quite attached, so removal was going to be tricky at best. We sampled the lump multiply times over the years, & no signs of cancer ever appeared. The owner elected just to watch, & we recently had to put her to sleep after almost 19 years due to aging issues. The lump never bothered her. The fact that Pepsi's lump disappeared for awhile makes me think this is more cystic in nature, so less likely to be anything cancerous, so this is good. Cats are very well known for having a mouth tumor called squamous cell carcinoma which carries a poor prognosis. However, it could still be something else. The only way to know is by doing some sampling via fine needle aspiration or possibly a biopsy. If squamous cell carcinoma is confirmed, it is not likely to respond to medications much other than mild decrease in inflammation. Treatment for squamous cell carcinoma is limited by how aggressive this tumor is though sometimes surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy are options. Sorry for the sad news. This could be a few different things. It may be a cyst or it could be a growth that is concerning. Without actually seeing the growth I can't really tell you exactly what it is. I always recommend taking an animal to the veterinarian that has a growth to have an aspirate performed. This may give an answer as to what exactly the growth is.
