My cat was bitten by mosquitoes. Should I worry about heartworms?

Hi there. No, heartworm disease is only transmitted through mosquito bites - meaning that the mosquito bites the pet, and transfers microscopic heartworm larvae directly into the tiny blood vessels under the skin. Eating a dead mosquito cannot transmit the disease.

Mosquitoes transmit heartworm, so if there's any chance that a mosquito can get inside and you are in a heartworm endemic area it would be a good idea. Heartworm disease is not as common in cats as it is in dogs, but there is no treatment for adult heartworms in cats and infection can be fatal.

Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes. So, your dog will not infect the cat. However, if your cat is indoor and outdoor, she is at risk of contracting heartworms if she is not currently taking prevention.

Brugia is a parasitic worm which has 'microfilaria' in the blood and the adult affects the lymphatic system causing swelling under the skin (cats, humans and primates; spread by mosquitoes, mostly in south east Asia). It is a very different species to Dirofilaria, (which affects the blood and circulation) although it has a similar lifecycle through mosquitoes and developing microfilaria in blood. Heart worm disease is transmitted by mosquitos. This is by far the biggest concern for diseases spread by mosquitos that we see in dogs. Dogs are quite resistant to developing disease from west nile virus, so while they can technically become infected, they don't get sick. Dogs do not get malaria from mosquitos. There is another form of malaria that affects dogs that is spread by ticks. Ticks can also transmit a number of other diseases to dogs, including lyme disease, and many other diseases.
