Do all mosquitoes give dogs heartworm disease? What are the symptoms?

First of all it is important to know that testing is the best preventing measure, once symptoms occur the disease is usually considered severe, for this reason it is important to test before symptoms occur. symptoms include coughing, exercise intolerance, loss of weight and increase breathing rate.

Hi. I sure hope Mason doesn't have heartworm disease. In the early stages of heartworm infection, dogs show few symptoms or no symptoms at all. The longer the infection persists, the more likely symptoms will develop. More active dogs, dogs heavily infected with heartworms, or those with other health problems often show pronounced clinical signs. Signs of heartworm disease may include a mild persistent cough, reluctance to exercise, fatigue, appetite changes, and weight loss. As heartworm disease progresses, pets may develop heart failure and the appearance of a swollen belly due to excess fluid in the abdomen. Dogs with large numbers of heartworms can develop a sudden blockages of blood flow within the heart leading to a life-threatening form of cardiovascular failure showing labored breathing, pale gums, and dark bloody or coffee grain like material in urine. Heart worm disease is transmitted by mosquitos. This is by far the biggest concern for diseases spread by mosquitos that we see in dogs. Dogs are quite resistant to developing disease from west nile virus, so while they can technically become infected, they don't get sick. Dogs do not get malaria from mosquitos. There is another form of malaria that affects dogs that is spread by ticks. Ticks can also transmit a number of other diseases to dogs, including lyme disease, and many other diseases. You are quite welcome for the help! Unfortunately, the flea, tick, and worm medication does not protect against heartworms, that requires a different medication. Signs of heartworm include a dry cough, lethargy, weight loss, anorexia, difficulty breathing, bulging chest, and collapse. Your vet can do a blood test to diagnose if she does have heartworm or not. Heart worms can be detected through a blood test that can be done at a veterinarian’s office. Heart worms are transmitted by mosquitoes...a mosquito harboring a life stage of the heartworm will transmit it to a dog by biting it. It is not passed from dog to dog through casual contact. Heartworm disease is easily prevented, so if your veterinarian can test your dog and he is negative....there are a number of heartworm preventative products available through your veterinarian. Most dogs take 2-3 years of being positive for heartworms before showing symproms. Most commonly you will see coughing first. After awhile, they may stop eating, get a pot belly and sometimes have labored breathing. At 4 months of age, I would not be too concerned about heartworms, but I would definitely get her started on heartworm prevention if you haven't already. I would have your vet check a heartworm test in 6-8 months if you have recently missed a month of heartworm prevention. I hope this helps!

I am sorry to hear that your dog is coughing. There are so many reasons for chronic cough such as allergic bronchitis, pulmonary hypertension, heartworm disease, enlarged heart, fungal infection, parasites, and cancer. To answer your question heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes only and can not pass through people. Also, there is no answer to how long it takes for a cough to resolve. It completely depends on what is causing the cough. I would highly encourage you to consider a follow up appointment with your veterinarian soon.
