My cat has a minor ear burn from hot water. What should I do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 5 months and 8 days old | 6 lbs

My little kitty decided it was a good idea to try to jump on the table while the kettle was boiling. She lost her grip and the water spilled on her. The only area I noticed that is burned is the tip of one of her ears. It is slightly shiny, the hair is singed a little but otherwise she doesn’t seem bothered by it right now. What should I do for this?

Oh no! Poor Bella!

Sorry to hear this has happened-but the good news is that if this is all, it is likely Bella will be ok. You may want to purchase an E-Collar to keep her from scratching the ear or rubbing it on things as it heals (it will likely get itchy and a bit sensitive). You can purchase a topical ointment or salve at most local petstores like:
https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/cat/cat-health-and-wellness/cat-first-aid/vetericyn-cat-wound-and-skin-hydrogel to coat the wound and keep it from getting infected as well.

As always, if the wound worsens or grows larger in size, please seek an appointment with your veterinarian. I hope this helps!
