My cat has hair loss and dry skin. Can I use miconazole shampoo?

This is a tricky question because a bacterial skin infection, ringworm, and skin mites can all appear very similar. The only way to tell them apart is by either treating for one of them or doing specific skin tests like a skin scrape, a skin cytology, and a fungal culture. I think it is ok that you are using the Malaseb shampoo for now. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). That is happening because this shampoo can dry up the skin quite a lot and cause dandruff. Supplement to maintain good skin condition can be used (like Coatex for example) but with normal nutrition and once skin condition is resolved coat should go back to normal. I don't see any hard evidence of fleas although i can't rule it out and would recommend treating for them anyway, this looks more like either a fungal, bacterial infection or an allergic reaction. i would not recommend using this shampoo prior to getting this condition diagnosed by your vet.
