My cat on methimazole is coughing. Is it allergies or medication?

Coughing and sneezing are not typically side effects of methimazole (which is the thyroid medication I would assume Harley is taking). Sneezing can be a sign of an upper respiratory infection or other nasal disease, and if there is a lot of discharge from the nose that runs down the throat it could cause a cough. A cough can also be a sign of asthma or other lung disease. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian for an exam and potentially chest x-rays. If your vet is suspicious that Harley may have a bacterial upper respiratory infection antibiotics might be prescribed.

I am sorry to hear that! Coughing in a cat is concerning. It may be allergies as you mentioned, although I also worry about heart disease, asthma, and heartworms in a coughing cat. Since they all have different treatments I would recommend having an x-ray +/- bloodwork done first to see how to tailor Fifi's therapy! I suspect she may be allergic to something in your new apartment. It could be allergy to plants or pollen but some allergies in cats are triggered by floor cleaners, dust, new carpets etc. Also, coughing in cats is often a sign of asthma, so maybe Mia has mild asthma ? Sometimes this kind of allergies or mild asthmatic attacks are very difficult to diagnose. The common way to go to in such cases is prescribing anti-allergic / anti-asthmatic treatment for 1-2 weeks. I would suggest you to discuss that with your vets.

These signs could be consistent with methimazole related side effects. GI upset and facial itching are some of the most common acute side effects in the first few months of therapy. I would recommend stopping the medication until you can talk to your vet about your concerns. Some cats can not take this medication and thus require an alternate method of treatment. Hi there. Coughing in an older cat like this could be caused by a number of different things, including asthma, allergies, bronchitis, or some type of respiratory infection. Since it's been going on for two weeks now, I would recommend taking Cleopatra to the vet on Monday for an exam. He/she can listen to her heart and lungs to check for any obvious abnormalities, and may recommend chest x-rays or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and see what kind of treatment is needed.

Hello, sorry to hear about your kittens. Allergies in your cat can be managed with medications and environmental modifications. Do not use any aerosolized sprays, candles, or fragrances because this can exacerbate the coughing. Clean often to limit the amount of dust around the house. Sometimes you may have to use litter that clumps and has less sand in it. Dry food may need to be moistened with water so that the food dust does not cause irritation. If a round of antibiotics did not cure Tsuyu's cough, then it may not be caused by a bacteria. Other possible causes of cough include heart disease, lung parasites, allergies, asthma, fungal infections, pharyngeal polyp, among many other things.
