My cat has bleeding mammary cancer. Can I use a human spray bandage?

Unfortunately it sounds like a very aggressive tumor and it is not likely to heal, for open wounds i usually like to use Green clay, i apply it on the wound 2-4 times a day but in this case i am not sure it will help.

Hi Linda. I'm sorry to hear that Bugger has squamous cell carcinoma. If you're cleaning the wound simply to remove any build up of discharge, then saline alone is sufficient. However, if you're looking more for antiseptic properties, cleansers like chlorhexidine (Hibiclens is a trade name) or betadine are more effective. Either of these should be rinsed well with water. With that said, if his SCC is near his eye, avoid other cleansers, as they could cause eye irritation. Generally speaking, I try to avoid medications containing neomycin in cats because many cats can react poorly. Additionally, the dexamethasone may help minimize some inflammation, but is likely to delay any healing. Ultimately, your best option is to establish a care protocol with Bugger's vet since I don't know the extent of this lesion nor its location. In the meantime, you can stick with saline cleaning if the lesion is near his eye, or switch to the antiseptic cleansers mentioned above if the lesion is elsewhere. I hope that everything goes well.

Cats are very well known for having a mouth tumor called squamous cell carcinoma which carries a poor prognosis. However, it could still be something else. The only way to know is by doing some sampling via fine needle aspiration or possibly a biopsy. If squamous cell carcinoma is confirmed, it is not likely to respond to medications much other than mild decrease in inflammation. Treatment for squamous cell carcinoma is limited by how aggressive this tumor is though sometimes surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy are options. Sorry for the sad news. Unless your veterinarian prescribed curaderm, please do not use it in your cat. The cancerous areas will need to be removed surgically and then your cat may need chemotherapy. Please do not use ointment with salicylic acid on your cat, as cats cannot metabolise it. It will accumulate and eventually make your cat very ill. please take your cat to a veterinarian for a consult.

Hello, I am so sorry for you poor Xena, but there is nothing topical that you will have at home that will have any effect on cancer cells. Until you can have her seen by your veterinarian, I would bandage up the leg to prevent further trauma & self-mutilation. You can try and keep the area as clean as possible and flush out the wound using a diluted solution of Betadine and saline. Mix the 2 together until you have a light brown solution and flush out the wound 2 to 3 times per day. This may not heal or close if it is cancer and may progress. If it worsens, it needs to be assessed by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please be advised that to prevent this from happening to future pets, they need to be spayed before their first heat cycle. The chance of getting mammary tumors is virtually zero when a female dog is spayed young. It is very difficult for me to tell the orientation of what is going on in this photo. I'm assuming the photo is of the abdomen since you said they are mammary tumors but again, it is hard to tell what is going on based on this one photo. You are not going to get these to clear up and will likely only get worse; they are malignant cancer. They will only stop weeping when she stops scratching them. All you can do is exactly what you are doing although I don't think you should blow dry them - it is very easy to burn the skin making it worse. Everything else you are doing is fine. I'm not sure what you are using to cover her but I suggest a recovery suit and to put a feminine maxi pad between the skin lesions and the suit to catch any discharge. This protective layer should stop her from traumatizing the area. You can also put a human baby sock on her back feet so it covers the nails so if she does scratch she cannot hurt the area.
