Can ultrasound diagnose cat lymphoma, or do I need a biopsy?

Dear Doctor: I have the following questions about lymphoma diagnosis: 1. Can ultrasound confirm diagnosis of lymphoma? 2. If not, what tests can confirm diagnosis of lymphoma? 3. Can biopsies through an endoscopy test confirm lymphoma? 4. Why is taking biopsies considered as the gold standard in tissue sampling, and in detecting lymphoma? 5. Sam is a 13-year old Siamese male cat, and has pancreatitis and ileus, the pancreatitis subsides but the ileus persists, what tests, would you suggest

Hi there and thank you for your post. While ultrasound can be quite a values tool in diagnostics, it is unable to diagnose lymphoma on its own. Endoscopy is considered good standard because samples of tissue can be biopsied and then processed at a lab by a pathologist and interpreted at the cellular level, which ultrasound cannot do. I would suggest an ultrasound first if you haven't already and then if no at is not a concern, set up a second opinion with an internal medicine specialist to discuss the next diagnostic steps and treatment options. If lymphoma is confirmed, you may want to consider a consult with an oncologist at that point. Hope that helps and hope Sam feels better soon! These are great questions. Contrary to popular belief, most cancer patients in veterinary medicine have completely unremarkable bloodwork. Just because there are many extra lymphocytes in the walls of the intestines, does not mean there are extra lymphocytes in the blood stream - where our sample comes from. We can be suspicious of it from an ultrasound but cannot truly diagnose it without the biopsy. As for the second part, small cell lymphoma is a disease that affects large sections of or almost the entire small bowel. It is not a single mass that can be removed. My Ragdoll has lymphoma. What tests determine if surgery is an option?

Hello. I’m so sorry to hear about your cat. I had a lovely long haired cat with lymphoma years ago. There is lymph tissue throughout the body. Before deciding on any types of surgery, it is beneficial to know just how extensive her cancer is. If she, for example, has a section of intestinal tract with a tumor or a couple of tumors, that area can be removed. However, if it seems that the cancer is already metastasized to liver, spleen, lungs, etc. , her prognosis would change and possibly surgery would not be if much benefit. A treatment plan if surgery/ chemotherapy / both can be arrived at after more information is collected.

Cat losing weight & hair: Can I diagnose a tumor without ultrasound?

I'm sorry Baxter isn't doing well at the moment! Unfortunately evidence of tumors do not always show up on blood work, and the next step is imaging such as x-rays or an ultrasound. Sometimes the tumor has to be visualized with these methods in order to reach a diagnosis. Given that it sounds like your vet has recommended this as the next step, I would follow that recommendation. I hope this helps!

IBD and GI lymphoma can look identical on lab work and ultrasound - the only way to distinguish the two for certain is to do an intestinal biopsy. Steroids can decrease the number of inflammatory cells and make diagnosis more difficult. Both can be difficult to manage, and each cat may need a different treatment plan. Often pain medications, nausea medications, anti-inflammatories, hypoallergenic diets, probiotics, antibiotics, etc are needed.

Senior cat lymphoma: Is surgery safe, or treat presumptively?

I'm sorry your cat may have lymphoma. The surgery and biopsies aren't very painful, she will be under anesthesia, and they will give her some pain medication afterwards. The danger of it depends on her health status, and her vet can give you the best estimate of this. Any surgery carries risk, but it can still be safe in a cat this age. Personally I'd do the surgery first. I hope this helps!

Cat X-ray shows a mass. Can vets identify it or is it lymphoma?

So very sorry for you loss of Indy. My condolences. I can see on the x-ray what the vet was thinking may have been an adhesion. I cannot tell you what it is though just by looking at the x-ray. The only way to know what the mass is/was is to have sent it to a laboratory for histopathology. Masses can be any number of things. I can tell you that lymphoma is quite common in cats. Unfortunately, we are not going to be able to help you with this via the internet as we were not there to see what happened. If you wanted a definitive diagnosis then a necropsy (autopsy) would have been needed with tissue samples sent to the lab for analysis.

Can cat lung lymphoma be treated with surgery if my vet says no?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Phoebe! Lymphoma is a diffuse cancer. It usually isn't a solitary mass but is throughout the entire organ. In Phoebe's case all her lung tissue. So Lymphoma is treated with chemotherapy not surgery usually. Since you are willing to treat, ask for a lung aspirate or biopsy. They can biopsy the lung, culture it for bacteria and do a fungal culture. Sometimes you have to be the health advocate for your pet! It's not an easy surgery and aspirates are risky. But if you want to know what is going on then you should try to get an answer. Also since you have been seeing a specialist maybe they can use a scope to get the samples.
