Sudden weight loss is always a very big warning light that should not be taken lightly, it's usually a sign of an internal disease that needs to be investigated, i strongly recommend taking him to the vet in order to get it checked, he will need to have a blood test done and possibly an xray as well in order to attempt to diagnose the reason for these symptoms.

When cats lose weight rapidly we worry about several potential diseases including kidney disease, diabetes (they tend to be drinking a lot of water with these two), increased thyroid level (hyperthyroidism), and disease in the intestine (inflammation or even cancer). A common cause of weight loss in cats is hyperthyroidism. Your vet can run blood work to test his thyroid to determine if he has the condition. Other causes include infections, parasites, liver/kidney disease, endocrine diseases, cancer, etc. Schedule an appointment with your vet for to have a work-up.

Not necessarily. Senior cats do get several treatable aging diseases like hyperthyroidism, chronic renal failure, and heart abnormalities. With treatment they can improve and continue to live a comfortable life. I recommend a senior workout to determine if there is a treatable problem.
