My cat was locked in the basement for a week. Any health concerns?

Hello. This was a very stressful event for autumn, so I would give her another 24 hours to see if she calms down. If she is still obviously agitated, I would recommend a visit to your vet. She may have ingested something while under the floorboards, or there may actually be something going that made her go down the hole in the first place - curiosity aside. Going without food & water for 24 hours should not be a significant event for her. She may just be interested in whatever is down the hole. Poor Hazel. The main things I would look for is if she stops eating or starts vomting or having diarrhea. Cats that run off for a while may have been bitten or injured while gone. Although you don’t see any obviously punctures, I would watch for any swellings anywhere. An abscess could always form over the next week from a previous injury where the skin already healed. Let her rest but her activity should pick up after a few days of sleeping. I hope this helps and she has a full recovery.

Hello, and thank you for your question. I'm sorry to hear that Sheeba has been unwell since arriving home. It is possible her behaviour is related to stress and anxiety. However, it could also be related to a medical problem. Whatever the cause, when a cat does not eat or drink for several days, this can lead to dehydration, weakness, and secondary liver problems, especially for a kitten. Because of this, I would recommend taking Sheeba to the vet within the next 24 hours. They can perform a full physical exam and run some tests to rule out a medical issue. They can also provide supportive medications to improve her hydration, appetite, and comfort. If the vet confirms she is in good physical health, you can try using Feliway, a feline pheromone spray designed to reduce stress in cats. Also ensure she has easy access to food and water in the place where she is hiding. You can gradually try interacting with her more and more, through offering treats, and speaking to her softly and gently. As long as she isn't a big eater she might get by with that amount of food, though ideally, I would like for her to have someone come in at least once art way through your absence to make sure she's got plenty of food and water until you get home. If there is a family member, friend or neighbor that could look in on her that would be perfect.

Probably severe dehydration is her main issue at this time. She may also have developed a liver condition called hepatic lipidosis which occurs when cats don't eat for many days. It sounds like the flood and/or all the noise from it may have startled Kent. If you have a bedroom or room that is away from it all and that is safe and dry to stay in, I would keep Kent in there with his food, water, litter, etc and give him a few days to settle back in and relax. Once he is calm again, you can then start introducing him to more of the house. If you suspect he is ill or got into something during the flooding, bringing him to a vet to rule out health issues is best.
