Why are my cat's lips yellow and pus-like? What health issue is it?

This can be caused by an infection or certain autoimmune disorders such as lupus. Similar lesions can be found inside the mouth, and may be causing Rissoto's breath to smell bad. I recommend having this looked at by Rissoto's vet to rule out autoimmune disease. In the meantime, I recommend trying to keep the area as clean as possible, and making sure that Rissoto's bowls are clean as small scratches in the bowls can harbor bacteria. Poor Roxie! I'm sorry to hear that she isn't feeling well. The yellowish tint to her nose and skin is actually a very concerning sign - this is called icterus or jaundice, and usually indicates either severe liver disease or a dangerous blood disorder such as IMHA (immune-mediated hemolytic anemia). This indicates that she has a life-threatening problem that really needs veterinary care as soon as possible. I would recommend taking her to the vet today for an exam - he/she can do blood work and other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment right away.

From the blurry picture, it is tough to say for sure what this is but it looks as though there is a ulcerated sore on the upper right lip. This looks as though it could be consistent with an indolent ulcer, which is part of a disease known as Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex (EGC). The cause of EGC is typically unknown but treatment is generally steroid therapy (topical and systemic). Generally, an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory are used to treat these. Also, if Leo is drinking / eating out of plastic bowls, switch to metal or ceramic to see if this helps. Many times, these lesions pop up for no known reason and go away after treatment. These lesions may not show up for months to years later once initially resolved. If this sore is not improving, I would have a veterinarian take a look at it so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps!

Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. I don't think it looks like an ulcer. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). This looks to be a rodent ulcer (eosinophilic granuloma complex). She really needs to see a vet for this issue. This is not something you can treat with over the counter medications. Also, there are not many over the counter medications that are safe for cats. These lesions are treated, typically, with antibiotics and steroids.
