My cat is limping suddenly, not putting weight, but can still jump?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 4 years old | 12 lbs

My 4 y/ocat is limping, does not want to put weight on her right hind leg, (although she can, and even jumps small heights). This has been happening for about 3-4 hours. I don't find a wound or blood. The only cause I know of may be that she ran down the stairs too quickly and strained the muscle. No vomiting, bloating, fever, etc. Leg doesn't appear swollen, (although she doesn't like me to touch it). Large area next to hip is the most sensitive to the touch. Suggestions?

Since it has only been going on a few hours and she does put some weight on it when jumping I think you could monitor her today. I would try to keep her indoors and confined to small room so she stays quiet and rests the leg as much as possible. If swelling starts, she starts acting lethargic, or the limping doesn't resolve in the next 24 hours I would have her evaluated by a veterinarian so they can assess her for wounds or more serious injuries. Hope she feels better asap !

Your cat has probably hurt himself either outside or inside the house while jumping. it could also be due to a fight with another cat outside that resulted in an infection. as it has been a few days already and without improvement, i strongly recommend that you take him to the vet in order to get the affected leg checked, he will probably need pain killers for a few days at the very least.

Unfortunately, without a physical exam it is difficult to determine if Stripe suffered a sprain, strain or other injury. If he is behaving normally otherwise, restrict his activity as much as possible. If he becomes lethargic, stops eating, develops a fever, develops swelling or bruising or if the lameness persists for more than 48 hours, see your veterinarian. X-rays may be recommended after a physical exam.

Should he still be limping after 24 hours, then I would take him into the vet for a lameness exam and possibly x-rays. It could be that Ballora has injured herself causing her to limp. She is showing you she is in pain by limping and not putting much weight on the leg. I would rest her for the next 24 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Keep her confined to a small room or a large crate (with food, water, and litter box in it) to restrict her movement. If after this time she is still limping, take her into a vet asap. The vet can diagnose what is causing her pain, and can treat her for it. The vet can also prescribe pain medication for her. Why is my 11-year-old indoor cat limping with no visible injury?

You didn't mention if it was a hind leg or a front leg. There are different possibilities for injuries based on which leg is injured. She may just sprained the leg but if she is holding the leg completely up and not putting any weight on it then it could be broken and she needs to see a vet. If she is putting weight on it but just limping slightly then just watch her for a few days. If it doesn't resolve then she should see a vet.

Poor Sophie! It is possible that she developed a soft tissue injury or fracture in your absence or developed a blood clot in one of her hind legs (saddle thrombus). Since she is unwilling to bear any weight on this leg, she is likely in quite a bit of pain and should go to the vet immediately for evaluation. She may need to have x-rays and pain medication. My 7-month-old cat is limping with a swollen leg. Should I see a vet?

Oh no, poor Belis! It is certainly possible that her leg is broken, but it could also be sprained or infected from an animal bite if she's allowed outside. She has to see a vet for this, so I would bring her into one right away. Given that it's really swollen and she's been walking around with a limp limb for three to four days, medical attention is required now. Please bring her into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see her now.

My cat is limping and crying, then acts fine. Is it a sprain?

The chance that there is a blood clot contributing to these clinical signs is very unlikely. Typically, when something like this happens, your cat would be in absolutely uncontrollable pain, screaming and crying like nothing you have every heard. You might also notice that the feet and limbs are noticeable cold. This doesn't sound like the case. In all likelihood, Autumn simply sprained or strained something and is now experiencing some discomfort as a result. One other cause of shifting or sporadic lameness in the limbs are tick borne diseases such as Lyme disease. While these are far more common in dogs, they can definitely occur in cats as well. Depending on your geographic region, the type of tick borne diseases that are most common will vary considerably. Hope this makes sense. Get Autumn into the vet for some examination if the symptoms don't subside in the next day or so. Just don't try and give any over the counter pain medication at home as there are none that are safe for cats.
