My cat lifts his leg when walking but shows no pain. What's wrong?

It’s hard to say if he is pulling up the leg due to pain, nerve tingling or just an odd habit. The best way to know if Ming is having any pain would be to take him to his veterinarian who will put the leg through full range of motion exercises. The doctor may also recommend radiographs if something is suspicious. One thing you can do prior to your visit is to record Ming walking around normally, jumping and also when he is holding his leg up. Often cats don’t walk in the clinic very well so it can be hard to visualize subtle lameness. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions!

I would be concerned that this may be related to some underlying discomfort as most cats will rotate positions and bend both legs at some time. Pets are right/left handed as are people and most will prefer a certain side but not to the point of never changing position. A thorough exam and xray of the paw/leg should be considered as early treatment and diet change/supplementation can help to reduce the impact pf injuries and arthritis in later life

You didn't mention if it was a hind leg or a front leg. There are different possibilities for injuries based on which leg is injured. She may just sprained the leg but if she is holding the leg completely up and not putting any weight on it then it could be broken and she needs to see a vet. If she is putting weight on it but just limping slightly then just watch her for a few days. If it doesn't resolve then she should see a vet.

Milo could have acted this way for a number of reasons including: - bite or sting on one of the back paws - litter or tape stuck on the paws -back or leg pain -neurological problem If he seems normal now, I would just monitor for another episode. Your cat may have either a metabolic condition like diabetes, or a developmental growth problem or orthopedic condition. The only way to know for sure is to have him examined, and have bloodwork and X-rays taken. This way you'll know what is going on and if there is any treatment you can provide him to help.

Poor Tom! Without seeing him I cannot say for sure what he has injured. He could have simply sprained a muscle or broke a toenail. Unfortunately, he could have also broken a bone. I would strongly recommend to have your vet take a look at him. Your vet will be able to localize the pain and take x-rays if needed. They will be able to get him started on pain meds and the proper treatment plan to help him feel better. I hope this helps!

He’s a good looking cat! The going limp on your lap is generally not abnormal. Some cats get very relaxed and some freeze if they are afraid. Reading the rest of his body language will tell you which it is. If you notice lameness, I recommend to record him walking or whenever it is that you notice he lameness and then set an appointment with his veterinarian.
