My cat won't stop licking his leg until it bleeds. How to help?

Place an e-collar (cone) on Elsa to prevent further licking. This may be enough to allow healing. If she has open sores, have her examined by your veterinarian as she may need antibiotics. An anti inflammatory or antihistamine may give her relief if she is itchy. Distract her when you see her licking. Provide toys, puzzle feeders and more exercise to keep her from licking. If this does not help, consider a consultation with a veterinary dermatologist to diagnose any underlying cause.

Your kitty is likely a nervous or stressed cat, especially if stressful events (new neighborhood cat, new boyfriend, new baby, mvoing, removing or adding furniture, new puppy , etc.) have happened before she started the excessive licking. This licking pattern would be typical for overgrooming. Your vet needs to rule out parasites, fungal and bacterial infections. If there is none of these then you can try to help your cat by removing anything stressful in the house that can be removed and placing Feliway dispensers in the areas she spends most of the time. If this does not work, then your vet can do some medication trials to see whether she will stop the overgrooming.

You can talk to your vet about allergy medication for that time of year to control it or even anxiety medicine for compulsive licking if needed.

Hello, you can purchase a small ecollar for a kitten and cut it down to the appropriate size. If that isn’t an option, then a sock worn as a body suit with holes cut for back end and legs is a good alternative (or baby onesie) though I’m not sure if it would effectively cover the area you’re trying to keep him from accessing. If it’s the feet and lower legs, then kids socks put over the feet and secured at the top with medical grade tape may work. You just need to be careful about how tight the tape is (need to be very careful to not impact blood flow) and pay attention to hair loss or skin irritation. Change any clothing or sock covering every day to inspect the underlying areas, and follow up with your vet as they directed. I hope this helps!

Ok. I'm not 100% sure I know what you are asking so I hope I can help you. 1. This looks like a wound as you stated. There is no way for me to tell you how it happened. 2. I do not see any worm(s) coming out but that is actually not unheard of. I don't know if you have cuterebra in your country but we get them in the US. It does not, however, look like a cuterebra infection. 3. I think the Soframycin you were using was fine. I cannot read the name of the spray that was recommended to you so I can't really comment on it. If your vet recommended the spray then you are better off using that. 4. If your cat wants to lick you need to stop him by using a "cone" collar. If he continues to lick it, it will not heal no matter what use on it. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Stormy! Stormy is extremely itchy if he is biting himself until he bleeds. Possible causes are fleas or allergies to his food or the environment. I recommend having Stormy seen by your Vet today. He is likely very miserable and would benefit from having medications started to relief his scratching. The Vet can check for fleas and provide a good flea preventative. The Vet may prescribe antibiotics for the excoriations and likely a steroid to help with the biting. Sadly cats can not be given human medications.
