Why does my cat lick herself raw and bloody in fall and winter?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 12 lbs

My female cat licks herself raw and bloody in the winter and fall months. I have a cone collar for her and that helps her stop but she goes back when her wounds heal. Is there any thing i can give her to stop the licking? or any thing i can put on the raw areas to heal and deter her from licking?

Anything you apply topically will likely get kicked off again and there are no safe over the counter medicines for cats Since it is a seasonal problem it might be environmental allergies that time of year. You can talk to your vet about allergy medication for that time of year to control it or even anxiety medicine for compulsive licking if needed.
