My kitten keeps licking Lamisil. Is it harmful? How to stop him?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You should rub Lamisil into the skin as soon as you apply it. Creams get absorbed rapidly into the skin and rubbing it in will enhance absorption even more. Lamisil is not toxic when ingested but it may produce upset stomach, so your Batty may vomit if she keeps licking it. Licking the cream off may slow down the healing. If after 10-14 days there is no improvement to the skin, your vet may have to change the treatment to anti-fungal tablets.

I don't see any warnings on the product about it being a problem if the animal ingests it when licking it, but to keep her from licking it off, I would keep an Ecollar on Missy while you are using this spray. Hello, sorry to hear about Felix. He could get sick from licking this medication depending on which type it is. You can place a cone or e-collar on him to keep the area protected and make it unable for him to lick at. Hope this helps and best of luck.

It is hard to know exactly what is needed without an examination though this does sound severe enough that it warrants an evaluation by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check if further surgery is needed or possibly treat for a likely infection and most importantly start Selina on medications for pain as this is likely painful. Hello, you can purchase a small ecollar for a kitten and cut it down to the appropriate size. If that isn’t an option, then a sock worn as a body suit with holes cut for back end and legs is a good alternative (or baby onesie) though I’m not sure if it would effectively cover the area you’re trying to keep him from accessing. If it’s the feet and lower legs, then kids socks put over the feet and secured at the top with medical grade tape may work. You just need to be careful about how tight the tape is (need to be very careful to not impact blood flow) and pay attention to hair loss or skin irritation. Change any clothing or sock covering every day to inspect the underlying areas, and follow up with your vet as they directed. I hope this helps!

You have discovered the biggest problem with using topical treatments in pets! While a small amount of ingested iodine is likely safe (although may cause irritation to the mouth or hypersalivation), you won't be doing any good putting the iodine on the wound since Khora will just lick it right off. If you want to continue putting topical treatments on the wound, then you will need to cover them with a bandage (that is changed frequently to stay clean) or have Khora wear an e-collar to prevent her from licking the ointments.
