Why is my cat constantly licking and holding up his paw again?

It sounds like there may be a foreign body in her paw which should be removed. Your kitty may have stepped into something. Thry to wrap him into a towel so he cannot bite you and check his paw carefully. If you can find something stuck in it you can carefully try to remove it. If he really fights you or screams or appears in a lot of pain you should take him to a pet ER for an exam and hopefully they can find the problem.

It looks like this may not be a simple infection. You should talk to your vet about a possible immune-mediated disease or a biopsy for a resistant infection or fungal infection. The vet may need to check his blood work and test for FIV/FeLV to see if there are any abnormalities which could affect healing.

Sores on the paws can occurr for many reasons. If it is a chronic issue, underlying allergies or a thyroid disorder are likely the issue. These conditions weaken the skin’s natural defenses and allow bacteria and yeast to set up opportunistic infections. The photo of Sammy‘s foot shows a round, pink lesion. It almost looks like some sort of a mass from the picture. I recommend to have Sammy visit his veterinarian to check that area out. If it is a mass, it should be aspirated as skin masses that look this way are suspicious for a cancerous skin growth called a mast cell tumor. Oh goodness, that looks like a deep infection. It could be bacterial or fungal, but I suspect more likely bacterial. He needs to see a veterinarian for an examination and treatment plan. It looks like he might have chewed a hot spot onto his foot. It may have started with a minor scratch or bug bite or allergies. That itched, he chewed it, which irritated the area, which makes it itch more, and so on. I recommend getting him seen by your vet soon to have his skin checked. After an exam and possibly some lab work, your vet will have a better idea what is going on and how best to treat it.

Holding it up and licking it are certainly signs of discomfort. A soft tissue injury is probably what is causing it. Complete rest and if the signs persist more than 48hours a check up and some anti-inflammatories would be the next steps to solve the problem and understand exactly the underlying cause it.
