My cat's steroid shot wore off. Why is he still licking his feet?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. The lump could be from a recent vaccination or it could be some type of tumor. If he was vaccinated recently, I would monitor the mass to see if it goes away on its own. Shadow could be dealing with an allergy or the licking could be due to pain as well. If the licking persists despite a steroid injection, I would recommend having an Cray taken of the back end to make sure there are no obvious bone changes that may be causing this. If there are not, then I would recommend starting a shampoo such as Douxo PS calm shampoo and bathe twice weekly. I would also recommend using welactin omega 3 fish oil and essential 6 spot on by dermoscent to help with a potential allergy. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Long acting cortisone shots wear off after 2-3 months, which is why you are seeing a return of Funnyface's itching. Steroids can be used long term, but blood and urine tests are required every six months with quarterly exams. I would speak to your vet about possible long term use of cortisone in Funnyface.

Since I don't know more about this case and why a steroid shot was given, I would advise calling your veterinarian and letting them know what is going on. Steroids usually increase a pet's appetite but in Abby's case, it hasn't, at least not yet. Your vet will most likely want to see Abby for a recheck and reassess what is going on. There are many reasons for anorexia including fever, pain/discomfort, periodontal disease, internal organ disease, etc. Your vet may need to do a minimum database including fecal/blood/urine tests and imaging studies (x-rays/ultrasound). Once a cause is discovered a treatment plan can be put into place to address the anorexia. It is possible you may have to force feed Abby until she starts eating again. Your veterinarian should have some canned diets that can be fed by syringe. Good luck

Poor Maggie. I think there has been a misunderstanding. They probably gave 20mg (milligrams) which is equal to either 0.5mL (milliliters) or 1.0mL of depo-medrol depending on the concentration your vet carries. The general dose that most vets use is 20mg depomedrol per cat every 8 weeks as needed. I seriously doubt anyone would give 20mL of this drug. Also, it could be wearing off quicker if there are more allergens causing her skin to act up. With it being the changing of the seasons, this very well could be the issue. Also make sure she is on a high quality flea preventative. One flea bite can cause a major allergic reactions in cats with her problem. If she needs another depomedrol shot, I would talk to your vet and see if they would be willing to repeat the injection as early as 6-8 weeks during high allergy season. I would talk to your veterinarian about giving him an injection to help stop the itch. He may also need an Elizabethan collar to stop him from licking. I would recommend not shaving him again. If Bugs responded to steroids and antihistamines it may be an allergic reaction. You may talk to your vet about allergies caused by flea bites, food allergies, or environmental allergies. In some pets, 1 flea bite can cause a body-wide allergic reaction. He may also need a hypoallergenic cat food for a few months. Common causes of increased eosinophils are allergies, parasites (external and intestinal parasites), and fungal infection.
