My old cat licks cream. Can pet clothes help if cones don't work?

Hi, I think one of the first conditions to rule out here would be eosinophilic granuloma complex (EGC) which refers to a group of inflammatory skin problems in cats. The skin lesion on the picture may be an eosinophilic plaque. Common sites are the hind legs and the stomach. The lesions can be large and may be itchy, and the cat may frequently tries to licks and even bites at the affected site which can make it worse. Most cases of ECG are due to allergies ( fleas /food/ atopy=environmental). Flea control is very important in the treatment. Most cases respond well to medical treatment with corticosteroids (prednisolone commonly) and antibiotic if infected. She will need to be checked by a vet to confirm and to be treated. Hello, you can purchase a small ecollar for a kitten and cut it down to the appropriate size. If that isn’t an option, then a sock worn as a body suit with holes cut for back end and legs is a good alternative (or baby onesie) though I’m not sure if it would effectively cover the area you’re trying to keep him from accessing. If it’s the feet and lower legs, then kids socks put over the feet and secured at the top with medical grade tape may work. You just need to be careful about how tight the tape is (need to be very careful to not impact blood flow) and pay attention to hair loss or skin irritation. Change any clothing or sock covering every day to inspect the underlying areas, and follow up with your vet as they directed. I hope this helps!

I don't know what the anti-itch product you are using has in it, but if it was not a steroid (like hydrocortisone) it is not likely to work. If it does not contain a steroid you can try product but if no improvement she will need to see a vet. As long as she keeps licking this won't resolve.

Ringworm is a fungal infection that is highly contagious and can spread if it keeps getting messed with. It is also usually treated with topical medications and shampoos. It would be best to talk with your vet about getting a prescription shampoo to treat the ringworm with, and to place an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Baby to keep her from pawing at the spot and irritating it more. Be sure to also thoroughly wash hands and clothing after handling her, and keep her separated from other pets until healed.

Creams get absorbed rapidly into the skin and rubbing it in will enhance absorption even more. Lamisil is not toxic when ingested but it may produce upset stomach, so your Batty may vomit if she keeps licking it. Licking the cream off may slow down the healing. If after 10-14 days there is no improvement to the skin, your vet may have to change the treatment to anti-fungal tablets.

Hello, my name is Dr. Elizabeth and I am happy to help. I hate to hear this lesion on Patch is not healing. I think the main thing to address is the licking. The first thing you need to do is stop the licking (since this can make it worse). Patches should wear an elizabethan collar at all times. Remember that the collar must come out past her nose in order to be effective. Next, wear gloves to handle the lesion and be sure to wash your hands afterwards. Get pet wipes that contain Chlorhexidine. Cleanse the area twice a day. This will help to control the number of topical pathogens as well as remove oil and dead skin cells. Lastly, after the area is completely dry, apply a topical antibiotic twice a day. Just a dab will do and rub it in well. Neosporin is fine to use. Again, wear gloves or apply with a q-tip. Patches needs to be indoors at all times. Cats can't wear elizabethan collars outside as they are a choking hazard if they were to get hung up. She can only wear the collar if she is in a safe environment. If the spot is not much better in 1 week, if it gets worse at any point or if the lesion is not completely healed within 2 weeks, Patches needs to be examined by the veterinarian. An e-collar (cone) will prevent further licking. A physical exam with your veterinarian may diagnose the underlying cause. He may be painful in the joint, have local infection (bacterial or fungal) or have allergies (flea bite, food or environmental). Any treatment will depend on the diagnosis.
