Why is my cat sick, lethargic, not eating after rabies vaccine?

Poor Jasper! The timing of his signs certainly correlate with his vaccine. Not eating and lethargy (as well as vomiting, diarrhea, facial swelling and hives) can be signs of a vaccine reaction. Vaccine reactions are uncommon, but do happen. If Jasper still isn't eating by later today, I would give your vet a call to have him rechecked. Some vaccine reactions require steroids and/or antihistamines for treatment.

No, this isn't normal behavior. While you can see a decrease in appetite and some lethargy, it's an unusual reaction to have a cat refusing to eat and drink, as well as not want to move. I would try to tempt her to eat by offering her some boiled white meat chicken (no bones) or soaking her food in tuna juice. If she still refuses to eat, then I would have her seen by a vet.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lily! Lily is likely having a reaction to the vaccines. If she has a fever she needs to see a veterinarian. When animals have fevers they do not want to eat. Your Vet, after their exam, will likely give her subcutaneous fluids and steroids. Once the fever and the reaction has subsided Lily will likely eat. There is nothing to do at home besides wait out the fever and that may take to long. Cats can not go more than 3 days with out eating or they get sicker. If she vomits, develops facial swelling or has difficulty breathing, this is a sign of vaccine reaction. This needs immediate veterinary care. That is very unusual that he is not better and I think he should have a work up to try to figure out the cause. Your vet can run some bloodwork to rule out potential medical problems. Most cats are usually better within a few days after having a reaction to a vaccine and three weeks seems like a very long time. If your vet can't do a work-up then you should go to a different vet for a second opinion and work-up. So sorry that he is having this problem.

Sometimes vaccines can cause dogs to feel a bit groggy, a bit like a person getting their inoculations. However it doesn't tend to be that pronounced. Dogs are very sensitive to new environments and stress so so wouldn't be surprised if a lot of it is down to the changes occurring. Whilst he is eating and drinking normally I wouldn't worry too much. However if he deteriorates or dies not return to his usual self in a few days it would be best to get him examined.

Hi. Poor Sunny. I know it may seem abnormal, but it is common and normal to have a patient be quiet, lethargic, hide, skip a meal, and ecen be sore and whiny after a vaccine. Some vaccines affect patients more then others. I would not worry unless Sunny starts vlmiting, having excessive lethargy, hives, swelling, or trouble breathing. I would monitor and call your veterinarian if any further signs occur.
