My cat's leg wound is black and dry, won't let me touch. What to do?

It appears that the muscle layer is exposed in this wound, meaning that there could be some deeper trauma in the area. Often these wounds can result in deep abscesses if not treated. It would be best to bring him to a vet for wound cleaning, flushing, and exploration. If sutures are needed, wounds are most successfully treated within the first 6-8 hours. Poor guy!

What you are seeing is likely dead skin and will fall off soon. Once the skin falls off, there will likely be an open wound. Once this happens I would see the veterinarian for a recheck examination as it will need to be cleaned out from infection to ensure healthy tissue grows back in. I hope this helps! That is a pretty large wound! That being said though, it looks like it is healing fine. It does not appear swollen or to have discharge coming from it. The tissue looks healthy. Having it stitched when it first happened which would have allowed it to heal faster. I am not sure how long it's been but a wound that size would take weeks to heal without stitches. If I were you I would keep applying a topical antibiotic cream and just leave it be. Stop using the Betadine. If he is licking it you must stop that behavior by using an Elizabethan collar (cone). As long as he keeps licking it will not heal. If you want it to heal faster you need to take him to a vet to have it stitched. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

Poor kitty! Since this wound looks rather deep and he is limping, I would definitely recommend having him seen by a veterinarian - it looks like he will probably need an antibiotic and possibly an anti-inflammatory or other pain medication, in order to treat the injury and help it heal.

Hello I can't tell from the picture how deep that wound is but it does look infected and there's underlying tissue and possibly muscle exposed. I recommend takinh your cat to see a veterinarian as she could be licking at the site when you're not watching and causing further infection. It may need to be closed or the vet may decide it should stay open (with some infected wounds closing can cause an abscess to form) and put her on antibiotics and pain medication. She might also need an E collar to prevent her from licking the area further.

Hello. I would not try to dress the wound yourself. Some products can be very dangerous to cats, and due to excessive grooming they often eat products. I would recommend firstly to get an e-collar to prevent her from licking. Cats licking at a wound would prevent and delay healing. Also, if it has been 2 months and not healing, then I would be worried about infection, especially if she has been licking as cat's mouths contain very nasty bacteria. I would suggest having it seen by a vet. You can try the e-collar first for a couple days if Luda isn't bothered by the wound, and if it is healing you can leave the e-collar on for 10 days to allow it to heal completely. If it isn't healing then have it seen by a vet. Don't apply any bandages or products to it, you are risking causing much more harm, and not helping at all.

This looks like an infected puncture wound from a scratch or bite. Since it is so painful and Coco won't let you touch it I recommend a veterinary exam. They can give her pain medication and clean and drain the infection. When the puss is caught under the skin it is painful and the overlying skin can become damaged and can fall off leaving a large open raw area. If that happens it will take a long time for this to fully heal in this area. With drainage and antibiotics Coco will feel better much sooner and the wound will heal more quickly.
