What treats or food toppers are safe for my cat with kidney disease?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 18 years and 11 months old | 9.5 lbs

Hi just curious if you know of any treats or food toppers that would be ok for a cat with kidney disease (early kidney but already on a kidney diet). I happened upon a raw freeze dried treat that I used as a topper on the kidney diet and tony loved it but I know it’s probably too high in protein. Thx!

Hello, thank you for using Pet Coach. Unfortunately there are no food toppers that I am aware of that will be suitable for a cat with kidney disease. Sticking to a strict prescription kidney diet is the BEST treatment for kidney disease and I don't suggest you stray from that. I don't know if you are only feeding Tony the dry formula but most come also as canned food so you could always top off with the canned food. You could even puree it into a gravy if you wish.

Hope this helps. Happy holidays!
