My indoor cat has itchy, infected sores on her back. What's wrong?

Hi there! The most common cause of excessive itching like this in cats is allergies - either food allergies, or an allergy to something in the environment. You may want to talk with your veterinarian about allergy testing to help identify the source of the problem so that you can put together a treatment plan based on this information. If he's allergic to something in his food, he may need to be on a prescription diet like Hills z/d or Purina HA to help resolve the itching. If he has environmental allergies, you could consider hyposensitization injections or long-term daily medication like prednisolone or Atopica.

This could possibly be a flea infestation. I recommend treating for fleas all year round if she is having this problem now. I would treat once a month. It also looks like she may have a skin infection on top of it. I would recommend a trip to your local veterinarian. If Aries is scratching or biting a lot they can give medication to help stop the itching and give antibiotics (if needed) to help with the infection. I hope Aries feels better soon. Hello. That looks like a moist and sticky bacterial infection, but a proper diagnosis would come from a hands on examination with your veterinarian. It would be best to have him looked at ASAP, but in the meantime....the main goal is to clean the area and try to keep it dry. You can use some dish soap and water to gently clean the area, then wipe excess soap away and dry it . Do not rub or scrub the tissue very hard as it is probably uncomfortable. Ouch! Poor Sable! From the looks of those open areas Sable could have allergies (food or environmental), flea allergy dermatitis, a contact allergy or even an issue with her immune system. I recommend using a good quality flea preventative like Frontline or Revolution to ensure this is not being caused by fleas. I would also suggest you get Sable to your veterinarian because it looks like those areas may be infected and require antibiotics. Your veterinarian will also be able to take samples from the area and see what other treatments may be necessary. I hope Sable is feeling better soon!

Poor Inky! There are a number of different things that can cause excessive itching and hair loss like this in cats. The most common possibilities would include allergies (food allergies, or an allergy to something in the environment), fleas, a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or skin mites (mange). Even if your other cat is not affected, Inky may be more sensitive to certain things than he is. Treatment will depend on what the underlying problem is, so I would recommend taking Inky to the vet for an exam when you are able to. He/she can do some simple skin tests to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate medication to treat it.

Have you put any medicine on that area such as flea prevention before it was noticed? Sometimes that is a sign of a reaction from a topical. Another area to check is his ears, sometimes they can scratch their neck instead and. Cause a wound if there is an infection or mites. If it doesn't improve then your vet can check for an infection or an allergy that could cause it

This is most likely due to some type of allergy. Due to its location it is most likely fleas but could also be due to something else in the environment. I would make sure she is on a high quality flea preventative like comfortis, cheristan, or advantage. Also, if you see any fleas on her I would also treat your house and yard for fleas. Fleas do not live on the pet but in the environment. If you do not see any fleas and the spots are not improving, I would recommend to have your vet take a look at them. There is a good chance that the spot have become infected and she may need some antibiotics and stronger allergy meds like steroids to help them heal. I hope this helps!
