Help! My cow's injection site is swollen, not eating, less milk.

IT is possible your cow has mastitis. This is inflammation of the mammary gland. Mastitis can be mild or severe with a deep infection. Try to keep the teats as clean as possible. I would recommend trying to encourage the calf to nurse from the inflamed mammary gland or milk that teat often. IF the cows udder starts turning color, patient develops a fever or starts not feeling well I would recommend calling a vet for a good exam and possible antibiotics

Hello. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. So sorry that Queen is having this issue. The exact cause of udder edema is not known in most cases. Mastitis is probably the number one reason so I think your vet was correct in treating for this first. It would be helpful to know if she is currently pregnant or if she has a calf on her now as the differential diagnosis would be different depending on the answer. Here are some reasons that may be causing this: * cow is close to calving * overfeeding grain * overfeeding sodium and/or potassium * heavy feeding of legume forages (results in excessive protein, calcium and potassium intake) * feeding soy cakes Some things you can try that may help improve the edema: * massaging the udder in an upward direction for 10-20 minutes twice a day after milking so as to promote circulation of fluids * forcing moderate exercise which helps stimulate lymph circulation * administering drugs such as diuretics can be used to speed up the removal of water from the body (must check with your vet first) * hydrotherapy of the udder - use cold water like from a hose to firmly spray the udder for 15 minutes twice a day So, if you and your vet can safely rule out true mastitis then I would suspect this is just edema that may be dietary related. Go over your cows diet thoroughly with your vet to see if you can get it figured out. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

It does sound as if your cow may have something stuck in her mouth or throat. If you’re able to gently feel around in her mouth with your hand it may be a good idea. If this is unsuccessful you probably need to contact a veterinarian to come out and have a look at her. Other things that can cause abnormal Swallowing/choking in a cow besides a foreign body include toxin ingestion and possibly a neurologic disorder. Hi, and thanks for your question. This sign could be compatible with an upper respiratory tract inflammation/infection or possibly to a rhinitis (inflammatory, allergic, infective). A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed. Hello and thank you very much for your question. What you were most likely experiencing is an injection site reaction. D’s can sometimes go away within 24 to 48 hours for these can stay for months. Sometimes these reactions can also be painful and elicit other immune responses such as difficulty breathing, etc. My best advice is to contact the veterinary clinic that administered the injections and tell them what you are experiencing. What most likely will happen is that they may want to re-examine your animal and possibly give you some topical or oral or injectable medication to offset the inflammation. Generally, these appointments do not cost anything and be makers of the vaccine take care of the costs associated. But this all depends on the veterinarian and the clinic involved. She may have had an injury that happened during calving, inflammation, insect bites, hormonal problems. You should have a veterinarian examine her, as she will need a vaginal exam, he needs to check whether the uterus has involuted properly or has fluid in it or a mummified fietus (even if she gave birth to a calf two months ago), take her temperature and check her udder for mastitis. Her vulva looks like there is some inflammation or infection going on.

I'm sorry but I'll need a bit more information to be helpful: 1) what injection did Cookie receive? 2) where is the post injection swelling? 3) What does it look like? 4) How is Cookie acting in regards to the swelling Some vaccinations cause harmless lumps that go away, specifically the Rabies. If the swelling has ruptured the best thing to do is use an Elizabethan collar (cone) or donut to prevent her from licking, shave the fur away, clean it with warm water and a gentle soap twice daily and apply a triple antibiotic ointment. Honestly though if the injection site ruptured I recommend seeing your Vet. I hope this helps but please repost with more info if you can. Have a good day!
