Why is my rescued cat inactive, growling, and has a bloated stomach?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 4 lbs

We saved our cat, from a ditch. He's about 6 months old right now and we got him 5 months ago. He hasn't gotten a check up yet or any type of veterinary influence. This morning he seemed off and such so I made him a bed from his favorite blanket. He layed there all day and wasn't nearly as active and playful as normal. He has been growling and hissing and his stomach is bloated. I got him to eat a little and used a syringe to give him water. What is wrong with him and what can I do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Oreo!

Oreo should see a Vet today to be examined. Possible causes are: Intestinal parasites, urinary obstructions (unable to pee, this is life threatening), fluid in his belly (from feline infectious peritonitis), ate something that is stuck in his stomach or intestines, feline leukemia, a fever from an infection.

His symptoms are too vague and can mean many things. In order to treat him he needs a diagnosis from a Vet. I hope this helps and I wish you both the best!

I am so sorry to hear that Oreo is not doing well. His x-rays look like he has some dilated bowel, which could indicated his intestines aren't moving well or he may be have an obstruction in his intestines. I would recommend taking him back to your vet. You may need to repeat the x-rays or an ultrasound to see if his intestines have changed in appearance or not and likely need more fluid treatment to keep Oreo hydrated. Fluids also can help to reduce the fever. Some cats with fevers like that and problems in their digestive tract, need surgery to either try to remove an obstruction or take biopsies to get a diagnosis of what is going on. Your vet also may have appetite stimulant, anti-nausea medication, and even fever reducers that may make Oreo feel better. I hope Oreo gets the treatment he needs to get back on track very soon. It is hard to say exactly what is going on with Oreo without examining him first. If he hasn't moved from one location in a few days, this is very concerning and tells me Oreo may be very ill. There can be many causes for Oreo's symptoms. Drinking a lot of water lately is a sign of diabetes mellitus or kidney disease. If he has only urinated a couple times in the last 3 days, he could have a urinary plug or blockage. In any case, Oreo should be taken to his nearest emergency veterinary clinic ASAP to determine the cause of his illness so he can get better soon. There is really nothing you can at home to help- taking him to a veterinarian is the best thing for him. I hope this helps and best of luck to you and Oreo. I hope he fells better soon.

Why is my cat lethargic, in pain, and not peeing after a storm?

It sounds like something is causing pain or discomfort for Oreo. I highly recommend having your kitty examined by your veterinarian as soon as possible. He could have a serious illness such as a urinary tract obstruction and this can be life-threatening if not corrected quickly. If you can't get in with your regular veterinarian, I recommend taking him to an emergency veterinarian.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Fiorre Flamma! I recommend that she be seen by a Vet as soon as possible due to the heavy breathing. She looks pretty sick in your pictures. Possible causes of a bloated stomach in a kitten are: intestinal parasites, constipation, and feline infectious peritonitis. All of these things are treated differently and have different outcomes. The best thing for Fiorre is to see a Vet for an exam and testing. I hope this helps and I wish Fiorre a speedy recovery!

My cat is sleeping more, not playing, and eating less. What's wrong?

Hello, and thank you for your question. Cats are notoriously good at hiding their signs of pain and illness. Often the only indication is a decrease in energy and appetite. Possible causes could include pancreatitis, systemic infection, gut parasites, or dental or abdominal pain. If her symptoms are not improving within the next 24 hours, I would recommend taking her to the vet. They can perform a full physical exam, checking for any areas of pain or discomfort, and check for fever and dehydration. They may recommend bloodwork and viral testing to pinpoint a diagnosis. At minimum, they can help rehydrate her if she is dehydrated, and offer medications to improve her appetite and comfort while searching for a diagnosis. In the meantime, offer her some other wet and dry food options in case she has just become picky with her food, and monitor her for any vomiting or diarrhea. I hope this helps, and that Oreo feels better soon!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Cheeteo! Can you post the blood work results and X-rays? Based on your post Cheeto has fluid around his lungs and in his belly. This is a serious, sadly. The most common causes for bicavitary effusion (fluid in BOTH the chest and belly) are cancer, heart failure, and FIP. Heart failure can be managed, FIP sadly has no cure and cancer is not a good diagnosis either. I am guessing that Cheeto didn't respond (didn't get better) on the lasix? The lasix is for heart failure. That only leaves the other diagnoses which are all not good. Unfortunately for a diganosis tests need to be done. If you don't understand what is wrong with Cheeto and why your Vet is recommending certain tests you need to ask them to explain things better so you can make the best decision for you and Cheeto. These are very concerning symptoms, and could fit several serious issues, such as GI obstruction, internal bleeding, infection, cancer, etc. I would recommend having Lily examined by a vet. After physical examination, the vet may recommend diagnostics such as blood work or x-rays to determine the best possible treatment.

It definitely sounds like something is bothering Kavek. I would recommend taking him to a veterinarian to get evaluated. He may have an upset stomach or he may have hurt himself.
