Can my IBD pet on a rabbit diet eat freeze-dried rabbit treats?

I'm glad you guys are able to get Piper on appropriate treatment for her IBD. Sometimes fruits and vegetables can be OK for treats. It depends on how severe her case is and how well she responds to management. Usually we avoid anything but their prescription food and medication while we are getting there IBD under control. I would check with your veterinarian if it is OK to give something like baby carrots or green beans at this time. Also some prescription diet also come in treats so that may be an option for Piper as well. I would bully sticks and high protein treats as they can cause IBD flare ups like diarrhea.

Yes, if your dog has a sensitive GI tract. Dogs won't typically get infected with rabbit parasites. They are usually species specific. Withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet ( boiled boneless / skinless chicken and plain white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Continue feeding until the stool is normal. Transition slowly to the regular diet afterwards. If the diarrhea does not resolve, see your veterinarian. Submit a stool sample to rule out other intestinal parasites. Try to restrict your dog's access to rabbit stool.

I'd be concerned that the color of Ripley's diarrhea is due to blood, but given she ate some rabbit food, this could be irritating her GI tract. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 6 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, you continue to see blood in her feces, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Common proteins such as chicken and beef tend to also be the most common types of sensitivities. Rabbit protein which you are feeding now is not common and likely why Trixie has tolerated it so well. Unfortunately, there is a possibility that she can develop sensitivities to this protein after she has been eating it for some time. You may therefore need to change her diet again. However, I would likely work this along with your veterinarian so that the case can be followed by both of you. Additionally, she could have other causes for her decreased appetite and vomiting and these other causes should be screened for as well by your veterinarian. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Anything is possible especially if this is a new diet that has been introduced. Diarrhea in rabbits can be very serious so I suggest you have Roshini to the vet for an exam. If you can, I recommend you use a diet like Oxbow. Remember, a rabbit's diet should be mostly hay and not pellets. If you are home cooking you are correct that you will need to add a supplement to create a balanced diet for her. Both these sites are based in the US, but your vet in the UK may have a suggestion that is easier to obtain in the UK. Most of the vet schools in the UK will have a veterinary nutrition specialist that also could be a source of help in creating a good nutritional plan. A probiotic that is avaiable in Europe and the US is called "Fortiflora" this is made specifically for dogs and is a very palatable powder that you mix with food. There is a human probiotic called VSL-3 which is gaining interest by veterinary medicine specialists as a high quality product. It comes as a capsule and can be purchased online.
