Should I leave my cat home during a hurricane or take her with me?

If you have someone that can bring her food at least once a day, you can leave her at home without any problem and this would be the best option, otherwise you could take her with you but she might get stressed from the car ride and the new place.

That depends on your cat. If she’s very sociable and travels well then bringing her with you is fine. If she’s nervous I recommend keeping her at home and having someone come in daily to take care of her. Cats often don’t like change and lots of noise. Please make sure she’s eating, drinking, and using the litter box daily. When stressed cats can develop urinary problems or constipation. If you decide to take her make sure you set up her food and litter in a quiet place away from the children and family activity. I think you need to prioritize what is most comfortable for you and your cat. Some cats are very stressed by changing locations, others enjoy it. Personally, I leave my pets at home and have someone trusted check on them daily to make sure they are eating and drinking.

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Cats, with a bit of work, can be taught to walk on a leash ( harness ). The best would be never to let your cat outdoors as this increases the chances of run ins with cars, dogs & other cats. But once a cat is comfortable in a home, they very rarely leave, unless something happens. Make sure Luna is spayed, & consider placing a microchip in her. That way, if she does slip off, any veterinarian or shelter can scan her & get her back home to you quickly. Hope this helps. Take care.

I think the bigger question for me is whether being away from you for a few days would be a bigger stress than the change in environment. if so, then I would take her with you. If not, then leave her in her current environment so she doesn't stress out and ask your housemates to take care of her if you think they wouldn't mind. I hope this helps!

Especially if it is hot out, the temperature inside of a tent could become dangerously hot and cause heat stroke, which can be fatal. Additionally, I would be nervous about leaving her in a tent alone because she could potentially attract wildlife that may attack her while she’s unsupervised. She may also run away if she gets out of the tent because she is unfamiliar with the surroundings. If she could be supervised at all times, I think she could be OK. I hope this is helpful!

Most cats do best in familiar environments, and since you will be gone short term, it is probably better for Olivia to stay at home and have a sitter or neighbor come in when your husband can't be there. That way she isn't dealing with the stress of a new place in addition to being away from you. I highly recommend adding in some calming devices such as pheromone diffusers that can help her relax some while you are away. Leaving behind a shirt or blanket that smells like you that she can also snuggle may help as well. Some cats may also respond to voices via phone or voice chat, but it depends on the individual cat.
