My cat is hiding and throwing up. Is it stress or something serious?

Hiding behavior such as you describe can indicate that a cat is not feeling well. That in conjunction with the vomiting in the last week makes me concerned that there could be something going on with Rudy. I would recommend that you have her seen by your veterinarian. They will examine her and may recommend blood work or x-rays to get a better idea what's going on. Please keep in mind that cats that go more than a few days without eating can become very ill very quickly.

Vomiting can occur from many conditions such as foreign body ingestion and obstruction, pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. Hiding is a sign of sicknesss or discomfort in cats usually. I recommend that you have Luna evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This will likely require bloodwork and abdominal imaging in terms of diagnostics. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least your veterinarian could start her on medications to make her feel better. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. Cats may hide if scared or not feeling well. Try to determine is anything has changed around the house that may have spooked her. Any new people or pets, a move, or sudden change in schedule. If you can't think of anything then monitor health closely. Eating, drinking and litter box habits. Notice any vomiting or diarrhea. And if she is acting ill take her in for a vet visit.

Stress can sometimes cause a cat to vomit, however if you notice one of the cats is getting ill a lot, is rapidly losing weight, or is showing other signs of illness such as refusal to eat or drink, extreme lethargy, etc, then seeking vet care is a good idea to figure out the problem.

Stress can cause cats to hide or act abnormally. For example if you had house guests or got a new pet this could stress your cat out. However medical issues can also cause cats to hide. Cats may hide if they are feeling bad. I would keep a very close eye on your cats appetite, water intake, BMs, and urine if your cat is hiding. If you notice anything that is not normal I would take your cat in for a thorough exam and some basic bloodwork. Older cats can be prone to things like diabetes, renal disease, and hyperthyriodism. These can be fairly well managed with meds once daignosed. If your cat is a male, keep a very close eye on the litter box and be sure he is urinating ok. Male cats can get thier urethra blocked and become unable to urinate. This is an emergency and can be fatal very quickly if left untreated. If it turns out to be just stress I reccomend trying a product called Feliway. Feliway mimcks the phermone produced by mother cats and has a calming effect on cats. This is very serious. Cats often hide when they are ill. Bob needs to see a vet as soon as possible. You did not mention his age so it's difficult to give you an idea of what may be going on. If he is a young cat then he may have an intestinal obstruction. In an older cat the most likely causes for vomiting, hiding, weight loss and "bathroom" issues are: kidney disease, thyroid disease, diabetes and cancer. Regardless, he needs to see a vet. You can't let him go on suffering.

Thank you for your questions about Jazz. Anytime you see abnormal behavior, it's certainly possible that something is going on and that Jazz is ill. Many things can make pet's have an upset stomach: parasites, new foods/treats, viral infections, eating something they shouldn't have, toxins, organ disease or even intestinal blockage. Since she seems to be normal otherwise, you can try to switch her to a bland diet of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% plain boiled white rice. Do not feed her anything else. After 24 hours, if she is still sick, I recommend to take her into the veterinarian to check for other causes of illness. If she is doing better, continue the diet for another 24 hours. Then gradually introduce which ever diet you want her to eat. Sometimes continued vomiting may be a sign that a certain diet isn't agreeing with them. For a routine diet, I recommend an easy to digest food such as Royal Canin. Most pets who eat this diet have nice coats, good stool quality and low stool quantity (a sign that the diet does not contain many fillers). I hope this helps to point you in the right direction.
