Why is my cat breathing heavy and acting strange with dermatitis?

Hi there! It's possible that this could be allergy related, especially if Perry sounds congested when he breathes or if he is having any sneezing or nasal discharge. The breathing changes could also be due to a respiratory infection, bronchitis, feline asthma, or even a more serious problem such as heart disease or a tumor in his chest. Since some of these problems can be quite serious, I would recommend taking Perry to the vet for an exam as soon as you are able to. The vet can listen to his heart and lungs, and may recommend chest x-rays or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem.

Asthma is the # 1 cause for these symptoms. However, it could also be pain from the lower GI tract, underlying heart disease, pleural effusion, or any other lung disorder. If this continues for more than 3-6 hrs, or if Harley seems to have labored breathing and isn't oxygenating well (blue tongue, open mouth breathing, etc), then its best to take him in to your vet for bloodwork +/- chest x-rays to help diagnose the underlying problem and get him on the proper treatment. If he is breathing heavy then he should be examined by a vet for a work-up. Your vet can take an x-ray to evaluate his heart and lungs to look for abnormalities that would cause him to breathe heavy. He could have an infection, heart disease, asthma, trauma from being outside, etc.

I hate the hear that Khan is giving you a scare. If he feels more warm than usual, it may be that he has a fever. Sometimes respiratory infection will cause a fever as well as a change in the breathing (congestion). Signs of fever are lethargy, sleeping more than usual, poor appetite and not drinking much. If you are seeing these signs, I would recommend to go to the vet for subcutaneous fluids at least. Cats do not take care of themselves when they feel sick and need supportive care so they don't dehydrate. If you are noticing significant changes in Khan's respiratory character, you definitely need to go to the vet. Things caught earlier are easier to treat. I hope this helps.

If he is dyspneic, he may have both upper and lower airway disease. I find that chest x-rays can underestimate the extent of lower airway disease. In some of these cases, we have to do additional diagnostics such as a thoracic CT, bronchoscopy and in some cases biopsy. He may need to be evaluated by a veterinary internal medicine specialist.
