Cat breathing heavily after steroids, vet says 50/50. What's next?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | 3 years and 6 months old | 10 lbs

Thanks so much for yere help. I had a question last night over cats heavy breathing after receiving two stereroids. Took her to vet this morning first thing after her being awake heavy breathing all night. She had a breathing rate of 60. Vet has her on oxygen and took fluid from outside her lungs and said her lungs are not normal inside. She is 3.5 years old and was a stray I found and love very much. What are her changes if getting through this. The vet said 50 /50

Hello. I am so sorry for your concerns about Coco. I will, unfortunately, say that lung problems, especially in cats, can be very serious. Your veterinarian will need to determine if this is a heart or lung problem, & if the issue is due to injury, a lung torsion, infection ( bacterial, viral, fungal ), or possibly even a congenital problem. You will need to be patient as your veterinarian conducts some testing, especially on the fluid removed from her chest. I hope Coco does well & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
