My cat died suddenly from heart disease. Was it secondary or primary?

Hello, my cat died recently of heart disease. I am just wondering if it was secondary and to what? She was negative for hypothyroidism. What else can cause it as a secondary disease. She was well one day and then ill very suddenly. She dies within 3 weeks despite treatment. I am wondering about her bald ears. Could this have been a sign of some sort of Cushingoid problem underlying or something? Just happened so quickly I'm trying to understand why

I'm very sorry to hear about poor Kim! When is comes to secondary heart disease, it's usually hyperthyroidism, or kidney disease that lead to heart failure. However, I would not be suspicious of a secondary heart disease from what you've described. Secondary heart disease tends to arise more slowly; where a primary disorder is more likely to happen suddenly. There are many primary conditions like tumors, infections, valve defects, artery defects and pericardial effusion that could have caused this.

The only way to find the specific cause is for a veterinarian, or veterinary pathologist to examine Kim's body. This is often more fruitful when the body is examined sooner rather than later; so if possible, I recommend requesting this from your veterinarian to get some more answers.

The hair loss on the ears would be unrelated to any condition causing heart disease and I would not be suspicious of Cushing's (very rare in cats and does not cause this specific hair loss). The bald ears are actually a common finding with cats and is usually not associated with any diseases.

She may have thrown a clot. Without a necropsy, it will be hard to say what definitely caused her death. What your veterinarian is saying can absolutely be the case. I am so sorry you lost Baby. Why did my cat die suddenly from liver disease or hepatic lipidosis?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am so sorry for the loss of your cat P! Cats are very good at hiding illnesses until they are very sick. Jaundice in cats can be from: 1) destruction of red blood cells. They tend to be anemic on blood work. This can be from blood parasites, cancer, immune problems 2) Liver disease: cancer, infection, toxin, inflammatory conditions or fatty liver disease (hepatic lipidosis). Fatty liver is a secondary condition. Prolonged anorexia is usually the cause. Anything that makes a cat stop eating for more than 3 days can cause fatty liver disease and 3) Gall bladder, biliary or pancreatic disease: infection, cancer, gall stones, biliary obstruction. P didn't die from an overactive thyroid. She died from whatever disease caused her to stop eating, that could have been liver disease or another disease that caused fatty liver syndrome. She sounded like she was very sick. I hope this provides some insight. Again I am sorry for your loss.

My old cat died suddenly. Was it a brain tumor or hyperthyroidism?

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Crystal. 18 years old is a great age for any cat, so you must have been doing something right for her to be with you for that long! Without a complete necropsy, you probably won't ever know exactly what happened, but it certainly is possible that she had a brain tumor or stroke. The symptoms you described (weight loss, nausea, fixated on food, crazy for attention, dizziness, then sudden death) makes me think of hyperthyroidism. Overproduction of the thyroid hormone is common in older cats (especially Persians), and is characterized by all of the symptoms your mentioned. Untreated, hyperthyroidism eventually affects the heart, so sudden death from a heart attack or stroke could have occurred. There is also the possibility that she had cancer, or that she simply died of heart failure related to old age. Regardless of the cause, she lived a long, long life with you, and I know she was loved. My deepest condolences for your loss, and I hope that time eases your sorrow.

My cat died suddenly after seizure. Was it his heart murmur or cold?

I'm so sorry you lost your cat so suddenly! An upper respiratory infection would not typically cause seizures. An upper respiratory infection can occasionally cause pneumonia or severe dehydration that could be life threatening but you would probably see other signs like trouble breathing or extreme lethargy. A heart murmur may or may not be related to underlying heart disease, but if there was heart disease present it could potentially lead to a seizure and sudden death. If he died recently you could consider taking him to your vet for a post mortem exam (autopsy) to try to determine what the cause may have been, but it can be difficult to know for certain.

My cat died suddenly. Was it illness, a virus, or vitamin poisoning?

There are three very common diseases that cats get that can cause his symptoms: diabetes, kidney failure and hyperthyroidism. If left untreated, all can cause death. I doubt a virus has much to do with it but of course it is possible. As for the vitamins, if they were made for cats that is not likely the cause. If it was not cat vitamins then it is possible he was overdosed. Not all vitamins are safe in large doses. I am sorry this happened and that he passed. In the future please get your cat examined by a veterinarian before the disease has progressed to this point. When they start losing weight that should be a good indicator that something is wrong especially if they are not eating and lethargic as well. Best wishes.
