Why is my cat losing hair, weight, and constantly thirsty?

Cats that are losing weight despite eating often have a thyroid condition although there could be other reasons like diabetes or kidney disease which are also common. I suggest you have Simba to your vet for an exam and some blood testing.

Diabetes could be an issue with your cat, especially if she has lost weight recently. Other diseases to consider include hyperthyroidism, renal failure, and cancer, all which could cause the symptoms you are describing. Drinking an excess of water in a cat is almost always diabetes especially with the concurrent hair/skin signs you are seeing. Usually that is due to a failure to groom themselves as they normally would. Of course, some other common differentials would be kidney disease and thryoid disease. No, this isn't normal for a senior cat. There could be a medical illness behind this weight loss and shedding hair, such as hyperthyroidism. This can be common in senior cats, and it can be treated either medically or surgically. I recommend taking Sino into the vet first thing on Monday for a physical exam, geriatric blood panel, and urinalysis. Older cats like your kitty often get an overactive thyroid which will show weight loss, a really fast heart rate, sometimes vomiting, and more vocalisation than usual. Some cats get skittish as well. Hyperthyroidism can actually cause heart problems and mask kidney disease. Hyperthyroidism is easily diagnosed with a clinical exam and a little blood test and there are various treatments available, varying from Methimazole transdermal ointment or tablets to slow down thyroid hormone production, surgery to remove the overactive thyroid gland or radiotherapy. If your kitty is suffering from hyperthyroidism your vet will discuss the various options. I suggest you make an appointment tomorrow.

Poor Little Man! His lethargy, weight loss and excessive drinking make me concerned about several possible conditions, including kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, and diabetes, among others. At this point, he needs to be seen by his vet for an exam and lab testing (CBC, chemistry, T4 - thyroid) to evaluate his organ function. There isn't much that you can do at home without determining the underlying cause of Little Man's clinical signs.

If he seems to be losing weight, I would make sure her thyroid level was tested. If so, the skin could be due to an allergy or other skin condition. Thyroid level being high can cause skin and hair changes so I would first get this level checked out.
