My cat is growling and hissing after pain meds. Is it trauma or overdose?

Acepromazine and diazepam at appropriate doses should be appropriate for post operative sedation and relaxation. However, neither of these drugs provide any pain control. I would consider adding an opioid-buprenorphine is my preferred opioid in cats- but since it is not available you may want to consider hydromorphine or fentanyl (in hospital) or tramadol (at home). NSAIDs are also an option but these have no sedative effect.

I would be sure your kitty has a safe area at home where he feels like he can hide/get away if wanted and he can easily access his food/water/ and litterbox for the next few days. I am sorry to hear about Eddie! Unfortunately there are not any safe pain medications available over the counter for cats. I would recommend getting Eddie to a veterinarian for an exam and pain medication (antibiotics may also be needed if bite wounds are present). Cats are very sensitive to drugs and there are only a few prescription pain medications available that are considered safe (these include buprenorphine and Onsior).

I am not sure how you are able to tell that he hasn't slept for 24 hrs unless you are also up yourself the entire time. Chances are he has slept somewhat, but these are still concerning symptoms that he may be having an adverse reaction to the medicaiton or that a lower dose is needed for him. Also it is concerning if he hasn't gone potty. Male neutered cats can get urinary blockages which causes them to be very vocal, lethargic and strain to urinate. I would advise taking him to your local vet right away for an evaluation and potentially stopping his medication until he is deemed healthy enough to proceed with either this medicaiton or an alternative. It is quite possible he has arthritis in the hips causing discomfort, which is aggravated by being overweight. Prescription pain relief would be recommended to relieve any discomfort and blood tests may be recommended to ensure he has no underlying health issues prior to starting these

I would wait a few days before panicking about long-term effects. The stress of being hospitalized, the after-effects of anesthesia, and any medications can cause temporary behavior changes. If the cats weren't prescribed pain medications, then I would talk to your vet about that.
