My cat just gave birth. Why is she lethargic, bleeding, and in pain?

My cat gave birth yesterday morning, I wasn’t awake to watch any of it and check to make sure everything was going ok. She gave birth to 6 kittens. Now her ears seem a bit hotter, the weather is warm though and she just seems very lethargic. She has been bleeding enough to leave some small spotting. I’m very worried about her and it is late Saturday night She just made a meow, as she is by my bed and it was like a twittering, which could mean she is in pain.

If Elle is still bleeding, seems painful or in distress, or is feverish, I would bring her to your vet ASAP. It is possible she could be having some complications from her labor and requires medical care. Bringing her along with the kittens for an exam can help determine if this is the case and get her feeling better.

Poor kitty! If she is still having contractions and something seems to be protruding from her vagina, I would be concerned that she may still have one or more kittens inside her. This is potentially a life-threatening problem, so I would recommend taking her to the vet right away for an exam. He/she can take x-rays to see if there are still more kittens inside her. If so, she will likely need an emergency c-section to get them out.

My cat just had kittens. Should I worry about her bleeding and fast breathing?

A certain amount of bloody discharge is normal after delivery. This can last days to weeks. If it is frank blood, Diamond should be examined by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER today. Check the color of her gums. They should be pink. If they appear pale, take her to the veterinarian immediately. Keep her warm and as stress free as possible until she sees the vet.

My cat had one dead kitten, still pregnant & bleeding. Is she okay?

It sounds like Callie is no longer showing signs of active labor, and some bloody discharge can be normal for days to weeks following the birth of a litter. It would be unusual however for her to have only one kitten and I would be concerned that there might be other kittens left behind. I would recommend seeing a vet as soon as you can - if there are other kittens that are alive but distressed a c-section might be necessary, and if there are other kittens that have died Callie probably would still need surgery to have them removed.

I’m sorry to hear that Peony isn’t feeling well. I am suspicious that she may have refused nursing because she wasn’t feeling well. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. I worry she may have a uterine infection or even a retained placenta or fetus causing illness. Why is my cat lethargic and messy 4 weeks after having kittens?

That is definitely unusual. Buttons needs to see the veterinarian for a physical exam as this is the only way to determine the cause. It’s possible she has an infection, a retained and decaying fetus, or something unrelated to the litter such as bacterial overgrowth or parasites. Best to play it safe since there are so many potential causes. I hope she starts feeling better quickly and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Please take her to your nearest vet if labour does not progress within the next hour. What she has passed may be a deformed kitten but now that she has started the rest of the litter must follow or she is at severe risk of infection
