Why did my cat's fur change from soft to rough after adoption?

Kittens will go through growing phases where their coat will look more dull or more shiny until they reach adult age. I would not be overly concerned based on those photos you posted - I think he looks normal. Once he is closer to adulthood you can have a better idea of how the coat is really doing and you can make a judgment from there if you need to change foods or add in a coat supplement to the diet.

I recommend to have your kitten examined by the veterinarian. The hair loss could be related to ringworm which can spread to humans. Other causes include poor nutrition or heavy internal parasites (some of which can also spread to humans). You veterinarian will treat for any parasites or ringworm and get your new kitten started off on the right foot. Make sure to feed a high quality kitten food such as Royal Canin or Science Diet. I also would suggest gentle brushing once daily to stimulate the loose hair and dandruff to come off. If their coat is very greasy, you may need to bathe them, if they are not fans of water, you could do a wash cloth bath instead of soaking them. Some cats can't groom themselves if they are overweight, so you can check their weight with your vet when they next have a routine exam.

Hello. It is very common for the coat to become a little more brittle as pets age. Tony is probably grooming a little less, too, so the oils in the coat are not being distributed as well as in a younger animal. all of this is very normal. If you suspect that Tony may have a bit of arthritis, talk to your vet about starting him on a glucosamine supplement, Adequan injections, or even some more directed analgesic medications. He may groom a bit more with this. But otherwise, I would not be too concerned. You have done a great job keeping him so healthy for all these years! Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. From the photo there does not appear to be any bald spots, however, it is not a very close up view. Honestly, unless there are bald spots and/or she is scratching the area I would not be too concerned. If the problem persists though (like for a few months) then you should take her to your vet for an exam. Some reasons there could be changes in the hair coat: 1. Diet - the special diet she is eating may be causing some nutrient imbalance. You should talk to your vet about putting her on a supplement for her coat (like fish oils) as this may help. 2. Skin Allergies - even if she has never had any symptoms of allergies before, they can develop over time. If this was the case though, I would expect hair loss and/or scratching, redness of the skin, etc. If you are not seeing any of that then this is not as likely to be the problem. 3. Fleas - again, I would expect hair loss and scratching. If you are not noticing that, then this is also not very likely to be the problem. 4. Stress - even if you don't think your cat is stressed, she could be. Try to see if you could think of anything that could be causing stress like visiting family, stray cats hanging around outside, you got a new pet, new furniture, etc.... 5. Thyroid disease- either a low or high thyroid can cause problems with the hair coat. Your vet can do a blood test to check for this. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Due to her GI condition, I recommend to discuss any supplements or diet changes with her normal veterinarian to ensure these do not upset her condition. For pets in general, an omega 3 fatty acid supplement can help to improve coat health. There is also a diet line called Royal Canin that carries several different diet lines including diets specific for GI issues. In general this diet line contains supplements for coat health. If your veterinarian agrees, a diet change may also be beneficial. Please post any additional questions.

I think your best option is to have Rubby examined by the veterinarian. Dry skin can be a sign of parasites, inappropriate diet or endocrine disease. At home you can try giving her an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for pets but it may not correct the underlying cause. This can however improve over all skin health. There are two brands of food, Royal Canin and Nutro, which are aimed at skin health and they may help as well but again, they may not affect the underlying problem.
