My cat has a fungal infection. What should I do to treat it now?

Miconazole and clotrimazole are the most common topical anti-fungal medications that we use for ringworm, but you will want to consult with your veterinarian before starting any treatment for ringworm to make sure that Pita Boo is confirmed to have ringworm, to make sure that he doesn't need oral medication as well and to make sure that the topical product is safe for cats. Hi and thank you for using PetCoach. If the fungal infection is ringworm, it can take weeks to months to fully resolve. Many times treating the environment as well as the cat is needed. Keep Mia indoors may make it easier to contain the infection and prevent reinfection. The vet can look at hairs under the microscope or try to culture the fungus from Mia to assess if she still has it. Hello. Yes, sometimes ringworm can be stubborn. If your cat has numerous lesions, or they are along the eyes and mouth, your cat should be on an oral antifungal medication. Also, cats will often lick the medication off as soon as you apply it, so it is not effective. If you are not using an Elizabethan collar, that could help prevent licking. Cases that do not respond to topical treatment often do better with a prescription oral antifungal. I would also make sure that it is actually ringworm. It may need to be rechecked by your veterinarian. Thank you

Antifungal medication (most likely a topical ointment based on itraconazole or similar) is required. Your vet can prescribe that when diagnosis has been correctly established by some skin testing for ringworm. Unfortunately, it sounds like a cream will not be a good option for Ember due to the location. Antifungal creams can be very irritating to the eyes. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yeast infections are uncommon in cats. Ring work (fungal infection) might be what you are referring to. Has Candy been diagnosed by a Vet to have ring worm? The treatment of diagnosed ring worm in cats is an ORAL anti-fungal medications and/or Lyme sulfur dips. I do not recommend using an ointment that Candy could lick off her fur and ingest. Lyme sulfur dips can be found at a Veterinary hospital or online. I hope this helps and good luck!

This can take several weeks to months as the skin and coat need to heal after the fungal infection is resolved. We cannot prescribe medication but you can bathe her in a cat labeled iodine or fungal shampoo twice weekly. Cats are very sensitive to medication so do not use anything on your kitten unless it is specifically labeled as safe for kittens. Check at you pet store and they should be able to help you find a safe shampoo for Misty. I recommend cleaning the bedding also and washing your hands after playing with Misty. Usually as the kitten grows up they have better immunity and they will start to heal the skin on their own too.
