My cat has cat flu & conjunctivitis. Keep him in? Is it contagious?

At this point they have all been exposed so there is no point in isolating any of them. The only thing you won't want to do is introduce a new cat or let these cats outside. You need to quarantine your cats to your house until they are well. I suggest you nebulize the ones showing sneezing and swollen eyes. I would also recommend you give them all a lysine supplement to boost their immune systems. If they don't like the chews/treats you can search around because it comes in various forms - powder, gel, treats, etc. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Cat flu is very common in young cats and is very contagious to other cats as well. It is treated with antibiotic eye drops/ointment and oral antibiotics for about 2 weeks. if left untreated many cats will end up blind or even die from the disease. I advise going to your vet asap to start the treatment right away.

Cat Flu is a general term that refers to an upper respiratory infection. In kittens, the biggest causes are usual one of a couple of different viruses that will go away with the infection. One of the viruses (herpes virus) will stay latent in the body and may come out again during times of stress. However, most cats have this virus already, so it's not standard for us to recommend isolation for the rest of kittenhood based on a history of cat flu. I would double-check the reason for the recommendation. I suspect there was something else going on with that case. The kitten should not be contagious if there were no signs of infection when you got her. Outside cats pose a risk of transmitting FIV and FeLV, which both affect the immune system and can be quite severe in kittens. I'm assuming that's why they recommended her not to go outside. From what you've described, I don't think you have much to worry about. Shelters commonly adopt out kittens with a history of cat flu and it's rarely a problem. Again, I think it's worth talking to the Vet at the SPCA. Sometimes the staff do not fully understand the situation and may have not explained this well enough. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Viruses can be contagious, especially if the healthy cat is unvaccinated. It is always best to keep a new cat separate from your other cat for about 2 weeks (most viruses show up in 7-10 days) and if Sifu is sick I would definitely separate them until Sifu is feeling better. Monitor Sifu, and if he isn't eating/drinking or is having trouble breathing then have him back to the vet. Once he is feeling better then get him vaccinated and then introduce the two. A cage in the same room won't separate the viruses, ideally, they would be in separate rooms where the water from the sneezing won't be inhaled by your healthy cat. Best of luck with them!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, I would isolate the infected sick cats. But if all 7 are sick I don't see a point to isolate them as they all h ave the same thing. I do not think they will re-infect each other. Good luck!

1. Yes, Sifu can and should be vaccinated since the vaccine for the cat respiratory viruses (herpes and caliciviruses) also covers the panleukopenia virus. While some cats will continue to have intermittent symptoms of respiratory viruses others do not so it’s possible that Sifu will completely ‘recover’. 2. Routine cleaning should eliminate the virus from your room, so it should be okay to move Panda back. Cats can continue to shed virus even after their clinical signs are gone so I typically recommend waiting at least two weeks after clinical signs are gone to introduce Sifu and Panda. You should consider getting Panda vaccinated as well.

I would keep the stray separated from your other cats. It is possible the stray has a contagious viral illness, parasites, or other issues that could easily be spread to your other cats. It is best to keep the sick stray in a different room with its own food and water and litter, and to schedule a vet visit ASAP for testing for FeLV/FIV, and to treat the ulcers.
