My cat has a firm lump on his tummy near his tail. Is it an infection?

There are many possibilities, Bubby may have an abscess from a bit especially if he is an outdoor cat, it could be a mat of hair if he is a long haired cat or it could be a tumor. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Tummy! Possible causes for a lump are: an abscess, a skin mass, or an internal mass in his belly. If Tummy has lost weight or is having any other change either behaviorally or appetite wise I recommend having him evaluated by your Vet. If the mass and in the skin (not the belly), is soft it is likely an abscess or a cyst. Sine this is a new finding I recommend having him seen by your Vet to be safe. It looks like it could be an injury to your cat’s tail. If he’s allowed outside, he could have gotten into a fight with another cat causing the wound. Cat bites frequently become infected and cause an abscess, so I would have this checked out by a vet today or tomorrow. The vet can clean it up and can give antibiotics as needed. I hope this helps!

Hello! This depends on how long the lumps have been present for. If they have been slowly growing (over a few weeks/months), then they could be some sort of skin tumour. If they just came recently (ie the last few days), it could be an abscess (which is an infection, trapped under the skin.) Would you be able to take Luna to see a vet? They would be able to examine him, and determine what type of lumps they are, and whether he can be helped with medication, or surgery. You can clean the area that he is bleeding from with warm water and a clean cloth.

I'm sorry to hear that Al has a skin lump that you found. Cats can develop growths that are benign (cysts, fatty deposits) or some that are concerning (skin cancers, abscesses). I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine what kind of mass it is, and whether or not it is potentially a problem for him. Good luck!

I would recommend having this evaluated fairly soon. It could be a swollen lymph node or abscess or tumor of some sort. The vet can do a needle aspirate of the lump to look at cells and determine what it may be or if it's of concern. Because some tumors can grow quickly it's always better to have lumps evaluated fairly quickly to make sure it's not malignant.

It's likely that this lump is an abscess from a fight he had outside with another cat, you will need to take him to the vet in order to get it checked and treated, if it is an abscess it will need to be lanced and clean under sedation, he will also have an antibiotic injection to treat the infection.
