I can feel a walnut sized lump on my cats underbelly, in the loose skin under his rear. I was wondering if this is a common place for any specific type of lump and how soon should I take him to the vet.

I would recommend a vet visit for this. From the photo it’s impossible to differentiate a possible abscess from a tumor. But if it came up quickly I would recommend having it assessed fairly soon. Your vet may want to do a needle aspirate or a biopsy to determine what type of mass/lesion it is.
