My cat has a fever and congested lungs. Should I be worried?

Hello, I'm sorry to hear this about Douglas. I think its a good idea that he is hospitalized with these signs of fever and noisy lungs. Persian breeds are brachycephalic, meaning they have a shortened nose and anatomically altered respiratory tract. This does make them more susceptible overall to respiratory infections like pneumonia. Some pneumonias can be viral induced (and then quickly get secondary bacterial infections which is why antibiotics are needed) and if that's the case, he should have at least some virus protection from his vaccines to reduce the disease severity compared to if he was unvaccinated. Many young cats will have respiratory infections and recover to live full, happy lives. Some of these cats will have chronic respiratory signs and disease over their lifetime afterwards, but this is often manageable and treatable. I hope this is helpful. This may be allergies or an upper respiratory infection. If it is viral it can take about 2 weeks to resolve. I would recommend bringing Wolf into the bathroom when you shower to have the steam help with congestion. If Wolf is actually coughing I would recommend having a veterinarian listen to him and make sure it is not heart related or something like pneumonia. Given the elevated temperature a pneumonia die to a mixed viral and bacterial infection is highly possible. Cardiac disease should be ideally ruled out as well. Often these diseases require a longer treatment course unfortunately. I do not think we can give you more specific advices at this stage, as a more thorough evaluation it would require more clinical informations including see the radiographs. Thank you for more information about Moon. If he has been coughing and you are concerned that the medication has gone down his lungs, yes, I would take him into a vet. It could cause aspiration pneumonia if it did go down his lungs. If Moon is eating, drinking, and is otherwise normal, you can wait until the morning to have him seen by a vet. If he isn't eating or drinking, and/or is very lethargic, have him seen by an ER vet now. Best of luck.

As long as Sunshine is eating and drinking you can monitor him at home. I recommend feeding wet food with added water and warm it in the microwave for eight seconds. The food will smell better and increase his eating and the added water will help maintain his normal hydration. If he should become depressed, lethargic or stop eating, please take him back for a recheck right away. He's a senior cat so I don't want him to go long without treatment if he's not feeling well. Poor Gus! He sure looks cute curled up with his buddy! I would recommend taking him in to get a exam by a veterinarian. They will check to make sure that his eyes are ok- some cats get ulcers with an upper respiratory infection. They will check for a secondary bacterial infection that would need antibiotics. Sometimes- they will prescribe a nebulization solution which is to be used in a nebulizer to help open up his airways. It is important to make sure that he keeps eating. I hate the hear that Khan is giving you a scare. If he feels more warm than usual, it may be that he has a fever. Sometimes respiratory infection will cause a fever as well as a change in the breathing (congestion). Signs of fever are lethargy, sleeping more than usual, poor appetite and not drinking much. If you are seeing these signs, I would recommend to go to the vet for subcutaneous fluids at least. Cats do not take care of themselves when they feel sick and need supportive care so they don't dehydrate. If you are noticing significant changes in Khan's respiratory character, you definitely need to go to the vet. Things caught earlier are easier to treat. I hope this helps.
