My cat has feline coronavirus. Do antibiotics help treat it?

There is no treatment for corona virus. Although there is a vaccine, the cat would need to have received it before becoming ill with the virus. Supportive care to treat the symptoms are the best option at this point. Antibiotics would only be effective if there is a bacterial infection. If the vet in Russia has determined that there is a bacterial infection, they will be able to prescribe an antibiotic such as Clavamox. However, you will not be able to purchase antibiotics here to send to another country. If the cat becomes dehydrated, the vet will want to administer intravenous (IV) fluids. This is not something that can be done at home. Oral steroids such as prednisolone can sometimes be helpful but again, these would need to be prescribed by a vet in Russia.

Hi, I think she should be able to have some antibiotics to prevent secondary infections if you notice that there is some discharge that could indicate this. She could have some fluids and also some food to encourage her to eat if she is not doing so ( Hill’s recovery). Hope this helps,

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would recommend making sure he does not have an underlying disease that may be predisposing him to these infections. Test him for feline leukemia (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) at your veterinarian's clinic to rule these possible causes out. Some cats will have chronic viral infections their entire life and we just treat these as they come. If you are not giving lysine supplementation and not giving Purine Fortiflora, I would definitely recommend doing so as both of these have been shown to lessen the severity and duration of the herpes virus flare ups. I would also consider an upper respiratory culture to make sure that there are no other bacterial causes that may be resistant to the antibiotics currently being given. I hope this helps! Hello. A probiotic is a very good idea. You might also want to start a L- lysine supplement. This amino acid was used primarily as an adjunct therapy for the feline herpes virus, but it may be useful here, too. All pet retailers carry various types of L-lysine. It is true that if she has the virus, the vaccination is not likely to help much, but it is still recommended to vaccinate her as the vaccination will protect her from other diseases. There is unfortunately no known effective treatment for calicivirus, when it flares up it is recommended that the vet pute Fluffy on antibiotics and anti inflammatories.

If it is bacterial in nature, antibiotics may be indicated. If it is viral, supportive care and possibly antibiotics to teat or prevent secondary infections my be indicated. You can have Coco seen by your veterinarian for an exam, diagnosis and treatment, Use a warm washcloth to keep the eyes and nose clear. Make sure she continues to eat and drink to prevent dehydration.

I'm very sorry your kitty is sick. Respiratory infections are very common in kitties and almost all are caused by a virus, not a bacterial infection. Therefore, we do not recommend antibiotics if we are dealing with an upper respiratory infection. There are several things you can do at home though. To help with nasal and sinus congestion symptoms, I recommend using the shower to fill your bathroom with as much warm steamed air as possible and then place your kitty in the room for 10-15 minutes at a time. You can do this several times a day, the goal is to help humidify the air and allow your kitty's nasal passages to drain and clear some. You can also purchase over-the-counter treats or a gel formula containing the amino acid supplement L-lysine made for cats. These can sometimes help clear a viral infection. Follow the label instructions to know how much and how often to give to your kitty. If your kitty stops eating or drinking, you will need to have it examined by your veterinarian to avoid complications such as dehydration.
