My indoor cat feels hot and is throwing up. What could be wrong?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Scratch. I think you mean he feels very warm and has a fever, in addition to vomiting. I would advise getting him to your veterinarian as soon as possible if the clinical signs persist, worsen, or other signs develop. Vomiting causes fluid loss and electrolyte loss and can lead to dehydration and weakness. Vomiting can be caused by inflammation, infection, dietary problems (including dietary indiscretion or eating things pets are not supposed to eat, food sensitivities/allergies), ingestion of foreign bodies or exposure to toxins, bacterial overgrowth in the gut, problems in the stomach, intestines, or even problems outside of the intestinal tract/stomach including pancreatitis, kidney/liver problems, metabolic disease (diabetes,etc), endocrine diseases (thyroid or other hormone problems), etc. A thorough history and physical exam with resultant diagnostics such as fecal tests, blood tests, and more imaging studies such as x-rays/ultrasound to try to determine what is going on.
Vomiting and a fever would tend to indicate an infection. I would be worried about pancreatitis, kidney/liver/gallbladder problems, etc. Good luck with Scratch. I wish you and him Happy Holidays together.

    I would recommend that you have Oliver checked out by a vet. Cats can develop food allergies even when eating the same food. Other possible causes of vomiting include hairballs, GI blockage, intestinal parasites, IBD, intestinal lymphoma, hyperthyroidism, systemic disease (liver, kidney, pancreas, diabetes), among others. Unfortunately, the temperature of the ears doesn't tell us anything about the core temperature - if you are concerned he has a fever, you can use a rectal thermometer to check, a fever would be over 103.5 F.

For this reason, I highly recommend that you have Turtle evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as soon as possible as I am afraid he is likely becoming dehydrated. They would be able to check for these possibilities and also check his hydration status and give him medications to make him feel better. Good luck!

My cat is cold, not eating, and stopped vomiting. Should I worry?
Hypothermic kittens can be much more sick than they let on. Vomiting can be caused by many things, including hairballs, food allergy, eating too fast, GI blockage, intestinal parasites, IBD, systemic disease (liver, kidney, pancreas, diabetes), among others. If the vomiting happens for more than 24 hours, or if Tom does not eat in that time, he needs to see a vet immediately. Continue to encourage him to drink water and eat canned cat food. You can use a heating pad on the low setting to help warm him up, but check often that it is not too hot as it is quite easy to burn their skin. You can leave the heating pad where he can sit on it, but if he moves away do not force him to go back.

What to do if my cat is sick, throwing up, not eating, feverish?
Smokey is a handsome boy, and I'm sorry he's sick! He could have eaten something rotten, could have a foreign body, may have pancreatitis, or could have a GI illness causing his symptoms. It's serious when a cat doesn't eat, as it predisposes them to a fatty liver which is fatal without treatment. Given he's been sick since Friday, he needs veterinary care now. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck.

If Boxer is not improving and is not eating or drinking, I would recommend taking him back to the veterinarian for a recheck and having anti-nausea medications and fluids given to see if this helps further. If he continues to not eat, he may need a feeding tube if his liver becomes affected. I hope this helps! I would avoid giving Calpol as cats are very sensitive to this drug and can develop toxicity quite easily. There are safer fever reducers such as Meloxicam that you can have your veterinarian prescribe for you. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further. I would also recommend an antibiotic such as Convenia in case there is a secondary bacterial infection Boxer is fighting.

Vomiting and diarrhea can occur secondary to conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, parasites, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Kalvin evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. At the very least they can start him on medications to make him feel better and check his hydration status. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. Why is my cat coughing like he's vomiting, not eating, and lethargic?
Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Elvis! I wonder if Elvis is actually coughing. When cats are coughing they sound like they are going to bring up a hairball or vomit but don't or white foam comes up. Coughing in cats commonly indicates asthma. Check his breathing when he is at rest or asleep ideally. If he is breathing with belly effort or his respiratory rate is greater than 40/min he should go to a Vet immediately. I am worried about Elvis, if he is truly trying to vomit possible causes are: foreign body obstruction (requiring surgery to remove), pancreatitis, metabolic condition like kidney failure, viral or bacterial infections, intestinal disease (IBD or cancer). Since he is not eating and is lethargic I recommend taking Elivis to the vet for an exam, blood work and possibly X-rays. If you can video tape the attempting to vomit episodes it may be helpful for your Vet. I hope this helps and I wish Elvis a speedy recovery!
