My cat's eye is closed with mucus and she's sneezing. What should I do?

It looks like Kitty might have an upper respiratory infection causing conjunctivitis. A viral infection is most common, although secondary bacterial infections can also occur. A scratch on the surface of the eye could also cause redness and discharge but would not cause sneezing. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian for an exam. They can check for a scratch on the cornea or prescribe medications to treat a respiratory infection.

Kitten needs to be examined by the veterinarian today. Many cats will get viral infections that cause sneezing and upper respiratory symptoms. Some of these kittens will get viral infections that also affect the eye and can cause painful ulcers which can progress and dive deeper into the eye (which is not good). Lysine supplements for cats may help with viral infections in general but your kitten still needs to be examined today. The doctor needs to check the eye for an ulcer, scratch or perhaps a foreign object trapped under the eye lid. You must also protect the eye from any scratching with an elizabethan collar. Lucy could have something in her eye causing her squint, or her eye may be sensitive to light. I would have this checked out by a vet in the morning, as any eye problem should be checked out promptly. Leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Given that she is sneezing a lot, it could be a respiratory infection causing the issues with her eye as well. The vet can diagnose what is going on, and can treat her for it. Best of luck.

In Muse's case with the combined eye issues and sneezing, I would recommend having her seen by a veterinarian for appropriate medical therapy. The virus will have to run its course like a cold, but medications will lessen the severity of the symptoms. There are other potential causes, but feline herpes is the most common. The other potential causes are other kinds of infections. Hope this helps!

Poor Satin. : ( Closing of the eyes along with mucous discharge are signs of an eye infection. Eye infections in cats can be caused by an underlying viral infection or from some sort of corneal trauma (ulcer, scratch). Satin needs prescription eye antibiotic ointment to clear this up. Your vet can do a quick eye stain to diagnose the underlying problem and get him the necessary medication he needs, so schedule an appt with your vet within the next 24 hrs to get this taken care of quickly before the eye worsens. This kitten should be examined by a vet. He has an upper respiratory infection - may be viral, like herpes, or bacterial. The vet will prescribe some antibiotics and some topicals for the eye. This is not something you can fix at home.

Your kitty likely is suffering from an upper respiratory infection and should be seen by a vet for an exam and deworming. It will likely need prescription antibiotics. In the meantime (until you can take her to a vet) you can tak a cloth with warm water an soak the eyes. This should help with opening them. You can then gently wipe off the purulent discharge.
