My cat's ears are black inside and itchy. How can I clean them?

Poor Spookette! It sounds like she may have a pretty bad ear infection. Ear infections can be due to mites, bacteria, or yeast in cats. I'd recommend scheduling an examination with a veterinarian so Spookette can have her ears checked out. A swab can be taken from the ears and evaluated under the microscope to determine if the cause is mites, bacteria, or yeast. She will likely need prescription ear medication to treat. Judging from the picture you provided, I see black waxy material and also a tattoo that has been done on the inside of the pinna. The tattoo is likely to indicate that she has been spayed and it is in the pattern of a circle with a linear line through it. That is not a concern at all and will be permanent. The black wax may be due to ear mites or an ear infection though. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Fluffy so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! Sometimes black wax is indicative of ear mites so i would get him a spot on treatment such as advocate that kills them. If the ear looks red it would be best to get it checked out as he may need antibiotic drops. If it is just dirty you could start cleaning it once a week with cotton wool and pet ear cleaner. Just dont put anything down into the canal, squirt the cleaner in, massage and remove with cotton wool. If you are unsure about doing this go to the vet and they will show you how.

Once or twice a day is not too concerning. Normal ear wax is a dark brown type of color and is usually seen in small amounts inside the ear. However, if the ear seems to be filled with the discharge, then there may be something irritating or infecting it. A very infected ear will also look red. It doesn't seem like Oliver has a big problem right now, so I wouldn't worry too much. You can attempt to flush his ear with some solution (can get this at pet stores, or vet offices) and see if that helps. I would recommend doing this no more than once a week. It is difficult to diagnose an ear infection without examining the discharge under a microscope to see if there are any bacteria, yeast, or mites. Based on the pictures, it does not appear to be a large amount of discharge. There aren't any OTC ear medications for infections but you could clean the ear with just an ear cleaner labeled for cats and see if that helps. Clean three times a week for now and then once weekly and see if that gets rid of all the discharge. If not, he really needs to go to a vet for treatment.

If the q-tip comes out black, then there is an excess of ear wax and likely an infection. The infection can be caused by bacteria, yeast, or even mites. Ear infections in dogs are very itchy, and often require prescription medications to help clear them quickly and manage the itch. The first step in treating an ear infection is breaking down the large chunks of wax and getting them out of the way so that medications can get to the surface of the ear. I like ear cleaners like Dechra Malacetic Ultra Otic that are antibacterial and antifungal. If you clean Remington's ears twice a day for a couple of days and he is still itching, he will need to go to the vet for prescription medications.

Good question! I would be concerned as well that a build up of gunk in one ear is an indication of an ear infection, even if you aren't seeing any other signs at the moment. Based on this, I think it's a good idea to have Nick seen by a vet in the next day or two to have his ear examined. The vet can diagnose if he does have an ear infection, what's causing it (ear mites, bacteria, yeast), and can prescribe medication to treat it. Even if it's just an excess build up of gunk and not an ear infection, the vet can give you an ear cleaner such as Epi-Otic to help clean out that ear. I hope this helps, best of luck!
