My cat has recurring ear yeast infections and anal gland issues. Why?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 6 years and 9 months old | 14 lbs

my cat keeps getting a reoccuring yeast infection in her ear. Only one side. We have taken her to the vet several times and they keep telling us to try different foods. Is there a better way to deal with this. She also has anal gland issues.

Food intolerance is the most common cause of ear and anal gland issues, a hydrolyzed diet is the most effective strategy to investigate this (royal canin hypoallergenic or hills z/d) and is only effective if fed with no treats, flavored medications or scavenged or hunted snacks. Weekly ear cleaning, antiallergy medications, regular parasite prevention and probiotic/fiber supplements such as fortiflora AFTER a 6week food trial should also be considered
