My pet has ear mites. Are they dangerous and how long until cured?

Canaural (medication with Diethanolamine Fusidate, Framycetin Sulphate, Nystatin and Prednisolone) can be used safely and effectively to get rid of mites in few days. I would recommend to take Joy to your veterinarian and have him treated appropriately. Unfortunately home remedies are not that effective in this case. Hello, first of all it is by no mean life threatening, but it needs to be treated nevertheless. if you saw one earmite under the microscope, this means there are probably thousands of them in the ears.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Ear mites generally are noted first with signs of thick, dark discharge which appears a bit "crusty". However-the lack of these symptoms does not mean all is well with the ears of your pup. Dogs can get frequent ear infections, just like we can. I can tell from your photos that your pup has hair that grown down into the ear canals-this will be part of the problem. Those hairs trap debris, water from bathing, extra wax, etc and act as a great reservoir for bacteria to grow. I always recommend to my clients to have the hairs "plucked" by their groomer when they go or to come in to the office so that we can do it. After the hairs are cleared and the ears are cleaned, I like to do an exam of the ear canal and to take a swab of the ears to see what kind of yeast and/or bacteria are present there. It is important to have this exam performed by your vet to verify that your pet's eardrum is intact and not perforated. Likely your pet will get prescribed some antibiotics if your doctor finds it necessary, as well as pain medications or something for that awful itch. After everything is well controlled, it is usually easy to get my owners on a good ear cleaning regimen to keep ear infections at bay. I hope this helps! My best to you and your pup!

Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent further trauma. Have him examined by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER. He may need antibiotics for infection as well as pain management. Once the infection is under control, an ear mite medication can be administered. Acarexx is a mite specific medication that will kill most mites with a single treatment. Severe cases may need multiple treatment. Topicals such as Revolution or Advantage Multi may also be used to treat mite infection.

I recommend taking her to a vet so they can test the contents of the ear to find out what kind of infection it is. Once they know, they can prescribe a medication to treat the infection and pain. Ear mites are easy treated with products such as Simparica, Nexgard, Bravecto or Credelio. These are by prescription only and can be obtained from your veterinarian. Oftentimes, just one dose of any of the above can resolve ear mite infection. The fleas may be more stubborn. You can give Chaos a dose of CapStar to rapidly kill any adult fleas on him. This medication can be given daily if necessary. Follow up with an oral or topical preventative. Treat monthly for at least 3 consecutive months, preferably year round. Consider "pre-treating" your home with an area treatment, such as Indorex or Knockout ES, to prevent infestation. Most fleas live in the environment and will hop on a dog (or you) only to take a meal. Consider an exam with your veterinarian to diagnose and treat any infection or other underlying conditions.
