My cat's ear is crusty and red after a fight. How to soothe it?

Your kitty has either a bacterial infection above his eye or ear mites making him scratch his ears and this area raw. Look inside the ears, and if there is black nasty crusty discharge, he has ear mites. The infection above his eye needs to be seen by a vet for antibiotics and possibly even allergy treatment. If he has mites, he needs a Revolution or ivermectin treatment to kill them. Hope that helps!

This definitely looks like a traumatic injury (bite/scratch). The first thing you should do with it is flush the wound using a syringe or other dispensing device with warm water for five minutes. This may not be easy, because cats tend to hate water getting near their face. I recommend having someone help you with this and wrapping Dixie in a towel to make sure the wound gets flushed well. In order to keep the wound clean, it's best to flush the wound 1-2 times a day and gently wipe away any big crusts - make sure not to scrub the wound, because this can make it worse. Apply the antibacterial cream after each flushing. If the ear starts to swell or have pus oozing from the wound, then I'd recommend she go to the vet for treatment. Otherwise, the wound should heal fine over the next 2-3 weeks. I hope that helps and Dixie gets better soon.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria but fungal infections are possible as well). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching (if any). If it is not painful and it is not soft and squishy (like an abscess) and he is eating/drinking and acting normally then I would suggest that you just leave it alone. Looks like he healed up just fine! Best wishes!

It does need to be seen and treated by a vet but it is not concerning enough to be an emergency. This can be from scratching or a skin infection. Just keep the area clean and let a scab form until you can him checked by a vet this week

Many cats get their ears sliced during a fight and the ear usually heals by itself. Just watch for swelling, and oozing of pus (infection). If that occurs you will need to take your kitty to a vet. Do not remove the crust or put ointment on it. It should be ok.

From the photo it looks like an injury to the ear tip. These often bleed and the scab would make it look black and crusty. It should heal fine without treatment other than what your are doing by applying the antibiotic ointment.
