Does my cat's dry food spoil in summer? Can I reuse leftovers?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 months and 28 days old | 10 lbs

Hi I notice the heat is coming and summer will be coming soon. Do you have any advice when it comes to my cats dry food. Will it rotten faster? Is it wrong to put back the left over dry food into the dry foods container? Do I throw away the left over? Anything else helpful would be great thanx.

Hi there! Dry food isn't a concern with being left out, it's the wet food that's a problem. In the heat, that can certainly go bad quicker than it would in the summer. It's absolutely fine to put the leftover food back into the dry food container. I leave food out for my cats all the time, I use a self feeder and I haven't had any problems with the food rotting whether it's summer or winter :-)

    Great question, particularly for southern California! If Luna food's is inside you don't need to change anything.

    Assuming it's outside, here are a couple thoughts. There are more wildlife animals around in the summer, so you might attract unwanted friends more. There are also more flies and the food is more likely to get maggots if left out for a long time (but this is less likely with dry food vs wet food).

    I recommend always throwing away food Luna doesn't eat after 24 - 36 hours and putting out new food to keep in fresh.

    If possible, keep the food instead to prevent bugs and other critters from getting in to it, but don't fret if it must be outside. Enjoy the coming warmth!

I wouldn't worry about dry food being left out unless it's not being finished in a couple of days. Your vet may carry Virbac Dental treats or Greenies for cats, either one of those should help keep her teeth clean and be a tasty treat.

I don't want to contradict your veterinarian, as he/she may have had a good reason for giving this advice. In general, though, I can tell you that there is no problem with feeding dry food only to dogs, regardless of the weather. I would suggest talking further with your vet to clarify the reason that this was recommended.

Buying cat food from a sealed bag is definitely best. I don't recommend buying from an opened sack. You did a great job by putting the food in an airtight container and I would keep doing that after you open a sealed sack to keep the food stored fresh. Hope this helps. Great question!

Is canned dog food safe after being left outside in Florida heat?
Canned dog foods usually have preservatives in them to prevent spoiling regardless of temperature. So this should be fine. If it is a refrigerated food then I would be concerned it may have spoiled. Especially if the cans were hot to the touch when you retrieved them.
