My 11-year-old cat is drowsy and hiding; vet found nothing. What now?

Hi Pamela, Sometimes basic blood work does not give us all the answers we need. If your vet did not include any treatment, I would recommend contacting them and letting them know that Moxie has continued to do poorly. They may recommend trying fluids or some other medications or may recommend rechecking her temperature and examination, then considering some additional tests. Good luck! I would recommend blood work and an abdominal ultrasound. The ultrasound will be able to evaluate the gastrointestinal tract much better and can sometimes find foreign bodies that the x-rays can't. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I’m so sorry to hear about Quavo. I would say if he is not improving, it’s time for more testing. Bloodwork and/or X-rays may give us a better idea of what’s going on. X-rays look for things like large heart, severe arthritis, and (heaven forbid) obvious cancer. Bloodwork will indicate kidney and liver function, diabetes, and infection in some cases. I do also agree with treating for pain. Many times pain looks exactly like what you describe so definitely give the pain medication as directed. An arthritis “flare up” can cause pretty debilitating pain and is high on my list if Quavo is 10 or more. Best wishes to you and Quavo!

With the description and blood results, I worry about a condition known as hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease) or triaditis (inflammation of the pancreas, liver and small intestines). For fatty liver disease, a feeding tube is generally recommended to help bring cats out of this condition as nutritional support is key and extremely important in these cases. I would recommend an abdominal ultrasound as the next diagnostic step to help better determine what the cause could be. If Kitty is still not wanting to eat, you need to consider hospitalization and feeding tube placement to help her get through this. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. He needs more testing. Just because the blood work is normal does not mean there is nothing underlying. Something is wrong. I suggest x-rays as the next step and maybe an ultrasound of the abdomen.

If Willow did not have her blood tested when she was in for her exam I would highly recommend having the vet pull a blood sample and check to see if she has any abnormal values. Kidney disease is something we quite commonly see in older cats and this certainly could be the cause of the vomiting / decreased appetite. If Shadow's appetite is decreased and she is lethargic, I would recommend having her seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.
