How to get my cat to drink more water? She's pawing and has diarrhea.

Hello, thank er you for using PetCoach. I would not necessarily be "concerned" but it would be good for him to drink more water. Two good ways to get more water into a cat are: 1. Feed canned food and 2. Get a water fountain for him. Cats tend to drink more from a source of running water. If he eats canned food it obviously has a higher water content than dry food. I suggest you do those two things and see how things go from there. This question cannot be answered without further information since her dietary intake, what type of food, etc are all tied into her daily water consumption. Canned food is high in water and dry food is very low in water so this will affect water consumption. Try asking this question again with more details. Also, how active is she? Is she an indoor only, indoor/outdoor, or completely outdoor cat.

From the pictures and your description she needs medications and possibly some fluid therapy. Keep her eyes and face clean just using a rag with warm water. Do not use human medications or eye drops. Encourage her to eat and drink, chicken broth or tuna water may help encourage her to eat. Deworming medication may help her diarrhea if it is caused by parasites. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Lola is adorable! If Lola is producing urine and acting normal I wouldn't be too concerned about her water intake. Some suggestions though are to feed her more of a canned food diet and gradually add water to the canned food to trick her in to taking more water in. Water fountains are a great option for cats who like fresh running water. Be sure that the Vet also dewormed her for round worms as the medications are different. ALL young animals usually have round worms. She should also have started her vaccinations and been tested for feline leukemia and FIV. I would increase her food volume as she does appear skinny. If she doesn't start to gain after being properly dewormed then I would consider a food change. I like he brands Hill's Science diet, Purina proplan, Royal Canine and Iams/Eukanuba. Be sure she is eating kitten formulas until 1 year of age. Good luck!

I would feed a small amount of wet food twice daily with added water in it. Continue to leave out fresh water and you can try a cat water fountain too. That circulates water and encourages cats to drink more. Most cats will drink what they need daily so I’m not overly concerned about this if he’s acting normal, has a shiny coat, and is a normal weight. If he’s lethargic, thin or not grooming well then he may have an underlying medical problem that needs treatment.
